Has anyone had sudden stabbing back-of-ribs pain?

Especially when hiccuping or laughing.

It's agony, like a knife being shoved in my back at the lower end of the rib cage on both sides.

Oh and now chills and fever.

Apart from feeling worn out no other symptoms.

Any ideas?

I had this once after a bad case of flu - I dismissed it as a muscle pull due to too much coughing. Turned out to be pleurisy - an infection of the lung lining. It got sorted out with antibiotics very quickly. But it was extremely painful while coughing/sneezing.
I believe the pain can be anywhere around the chest or back area (Mine was right side of my chest).
Please do get it checked by your GP to rule this out or any other lung problems! It could very well be just a muscle issue.
Hope you feel better soon!! Flowers

I have a temperature but oddly no cough or sore throat.

My baby has croup but I have no symptoms suggestive of lung infection. I'd feel a bit of a fraud going to the gp!

could also be indigestions or gallstones, i you have been coughing alot though would be muscular. The chills and fever and tiredness fit with gallstones though.

i would definately go to the gp, gallstones can often flare up after pregnancy, do you find you get this after eating? worse when you lay down?

laughingeyes2013 · 24/11/2013 18:52

Ah - hadn't thought of that.

It's been bad from the moment I woke up at 7am. Nurofen helped a little. I'm not aware of any indigestion so gallstones are looking a possibility.

I have heard that gallstones are the 3 f's; Fat, Female and Forty. I'm only 9st after giving birth so don't think I fully fit that diagnostic picture.

For what it's worth (incase anyone else gets this), the temperature suddenly went in the night as did the pain.

This morning I have a mild temperature but no pain.

My MIL says she had exactly the same thing last week and it lasted one day with her too.

Must be just a strange virus!
