Hi

I had a new patient check at my gp on 31 oct , they took a urine sample and my blood pressure.they left a message on my phone on 20 Nov which I didn't notice until yesterday , asking me to call them,
I have been so upset all weekend as to why they would call me.I called nhsdirect but they couldn't see my test results on their computer.
I have a history of cancer in my family and I'm worried that as its been three weeks since I attended there must have been a bad result and maybe some blood cells in urine.
If anyone has been in this situation before where they have had a phone call from a gp and was unable to find out why please could you let me know as I'm so frustrated that they are closed
Thanks

If it were urgent I'm sure they'd have called you again the next day. It's probably something like they've noticed your due a smear / asthma check up / flu jab. Try not to worry.

A standard urine sample is unlikely to flag up anything more than a urine infection, so try not to worry too much. It's unlikely to be significant news.

Try and calm down. You sound the same as me and always think the worse case scenario. The results of your tests would have been back with in a week or so and if there was anything really wrong they would have called until they got hold of you not just left a message. Please don't worry I know that easier said than done but I am sure worse case is that you have signs of a infection that might need antibiotics.

If it were urgent and serious they would have called you again until they got hold of you, not just left a message. I had a message left from my GP's surgery after I had a blood test to see if my B12 levels were coming up after I started having injections for it - turned out to be nothing scary either, just that they'd done a bunch of related blood tests while they were at it and found my folic acid levels also low. They wanted me to pick up a prescription of folic acid tablets, that was all. If all they took was a urine sample, you might just have a mild UTI - or maybe if you're a new patient there's just some kind of bureaucratic paperwork problem. Don't panic, call them on Monday.

They'll call back. Mine did this and needed another urine sample. This carried on for two months, and then they referred me to kidney specialist (long wait - 6 months, during with time the specialist kept sending me invites to their information days on living with CKD). I saw the specialist who wanted another urine sample. He was baffled as there was no symptoms of anything (gp had said blood in urine). Tested me three further times over the next six months. Nothing. Discharged.

I'm pleased they followed up - best to be sure, really, but it was a big worry about nothing at all. Specialist said they may have jumped the gun or just got a batch of faulty test results.

Am sure it will be nothing at all. Mine was.

Do you have issues with anxiety? You seem unduly concerned over a fairly minor thing? If they needed to speak to you, they would have called back. They were probably saying 'all fine'.

Hi .thanks.
I have gone through every scenario and if it were a uti surely they would have called me sooner which makes me believe the sample was tested further for something serious.I do have slight right side abdo pain which has been on and off for a few weeks but it hardly bothers me.
I have done a pregnancy test so its not that.
It could be that I have signs of diabetes as I do eat too much sugar.
I'm predicting that when I call tommorow she won't give me any info and will just say come in and discuss with doctor.but it takes weeks to get an appointment there and I don't think I can cope with the anxiety.
I see what you are saying about if it was something serious they would have called sooner but I get the impression they are quite busy and on the NHS choices website some people have written bad reviews about the surgery.
Thanks for replying I don't feel so alone now.feel like I cant tell anyone I know as they will worry.

I doubt it's anything to worry about either. My Gp call, leave a message if no answer then follow up with a letter if it's something that needs you to see them quickly.

4umbrela · 24/11/2013 16:36

I do have an anxiety tendency but I believe the fact that I work for the NHS in an admin capacity means I know how the systems work and I have a fair grasp of how inefficient GP surgery's can be. I work in statistics and process patient case notes of people with cancer so I think subconsciously this maybe effecting me.it maybe a case of ' a little bit of knowledge is deadly' kind of thing.

Usually when I get a call from GP it's because they have lost the sample or the blood specimen is in wrong bottle , has the wrong label or had clotted and they need to do it again.

Please try not to worry.

If it's a new Surgery they maybe just need some more details from you.

madwomanintheatt1c · 24/11/2013 17:07

Okay, then if you know more than is good for you and are aware you have a tendency towards anxiety, why are you consulting a website where you know full well there will be a raft of people ready to feed your anxieties? Step away from the keyboard and call them back in the morning. Grin
