I am possibly being really stupid but...

I went to the doctors yesterday about a couple of queries/problems. One of the things I went for was about my skin. Last time I went I had been given a cream to treat my skin but it made me feel like my skin was on fire.
The doctor prescribed Isotretinoin.
I had told him my concerns that I had heard that this was linked to depression.
He told me he was prescribing a gel (so Isotretinoin gel) and told me that it had no links to depression as it was only a topical treatment.
But...
I don't understand how this gel then comes with severe warnings about using when pregnant / breastfeeding.
I know the same warnings come with the tablet forms re pregnancy/breastfeeding.
How can the gel cause one side effect the same as the tablets, but not another?

They can't test during pregnancy or breastfeeding so usually err on the side of caution.

I was prescribed these things (I forget the name) for a hitnus (SP) hernia. I went from a perfectly level headed person to wanting to slit my throat. It took 2 weeks to get back to normal.

I told my doctor and he said ' well they weren't supposed to do that' no shit sherlock.

I don't blame you for being wary.

It isn't like I am planning on getting pregnant, I have the coil fitted at the moment and I don't currently want to expand my family.
I am cautious about anything that could potentially have depression as a side effect though. I had been prescribed a contraceptive pill a few years ago and would have happily slit my wrists when on them. I'm quite anxious too so don't like to mess around too much!

there can be a difference in side effects because the a pill will be digested and more will go into your bloodstream. a topical treatment won't be absorbed by the body in the same way.

if you're not happy though, take it back and ask if there is an alternative?
