im a wine drinker is that in the same ball park?

expatinscotland · 12/07/2006 22:55

i have AWFUL teeth. really, really prone to decay and even my baby teeth were full of holes despite a diet almost entirely devoid of any refined sugars.

if it weren't for flouride, however, it's very likely i'd have no teeth at all.

marthamoo · 12/07/2006 22:57

Soph, I'm really not a lentil weaver (though I do wear Birkenstocks) but I opted out of fluoridated milk at pre-school for ds2. But he does have Colgate.

OK, ask someone else. How's the diet going?

gothicmama · 12/07/2006 22:58

use floride toothpaste but am against it being added to water supply

Heathcliffscathy · 12/07/2006 22:58

errr...was going great until holiday.... then didn't dare weight myself for another week (which will be next tuesday) and was going well...til dh went to corner shop for mini haagen daz and salt and vinegar hulahoops...an unprecedented event in our house....so if you'd asked me at 4pm i'd have said...great...but now.....hmmmmmm

Ooh I'm might be a lentil weaver we lived in germany when from when I was 18mths old until 6. For years I had to chew a flouride tablet, which my mum decided I should have because she'd had fillings & didn;t want me to have them.

I also never had sweets (had choc after meals - it dissolves so not the same impact) & she always made sure my teeth were properly clean. I'm 37 & don't have any fillings.

We try to eat organic food, use ecover products AND use the Toms of maine FLOURIDE toothpaste. Although admitidlly I alternate it between colgate flouride & the green people toothpaste, which is floride-free.

Tough one - I'm undecided hence the above!

marthamoo · 12/07/2006 23:01

I keep doing reasonably well in the week...then it all goes to hell in a handbasket at the weekend. And we're going camping this weekend so I decided tonight (yes...Wednesday) that I'm in holiday mode and cracked open a bottle of wine (oops)

poisson · 12/07/2006 23:01

oh you utter ponces

brimfull · 12/07/2006 23:01

what type of water does he drink?
Doesn't floride occur naturally in some water?
I don't agree with adding it to our water but do use floride toothpaste.

Mojomummy · 12/07/2006 23:02

My dentist is continually banging on about flouride, DH and I have decided not to give it to our DSs, however they use flouride toothpaste.

I was given flouride as a child as my adult teeth were coming in crumbly (???) and it apparently did the trick. I am not against using it if it is necessary I just don't like the idea of giving it willy nilly or adding it to drinking water.

poisson · 12/07/2006 23:05

give him a fruit shoot

Heathcliffscathy · 12/07/2006 23:08

too much in childhood definitely is bad for teeth innit?

flouriditis or something, brown teeth essentially

and flouride is a carcinogen too isn't it?

google health effects of flouride

poisson · 12/07/2006 23:09

i have bootiful teeth

hairymclary · 12/07/2006 23:09

fluoride does occur naturally in some water which is why it's difficult to tell how much you're getting.
I was reading up on it the other day about how it's more toxic than lead, but dp did explain something to me that I think a lot of sites don't tell you.
Apparently thigns like lead are more dangerous because they build up in your body, that's why they are so toxic.
Fluoride is washed through the body pretty quickly and so is far less dangerous, hence why you can ingest more but not get ill from it

Heathcliffscathy · 12/07/2006 23:09

no one is arguing that genes have big impact on teeth darling

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 12/07/2006 23:10

'flouriditis or something, brown teeth essentially '

huh? it's added to the water in the US and all the toothpastes are loaded with it.

despite my molars being full of fillings, or crowned - i also have two bridges - my front teeth are incredibly white.

Mojomummy · 12/07/2006 23:11

but how much is too much ? My teeth aren't brown, ok they are a bit stained, but I think they are fairly strong. I think the mothers diet when pregnant is also telling & breastfeeding.

Very tricky - we need an expert !

hairymclary · 12/07/2006 23:12

yes it can cause nasty discolouration in teeth,
I am still undecided about it though, having terrible teeth myself

Heathcliffscathy · 12/07/2006 23:13

check this out expat...scarey scarey stuff

hairymclary · 12/07/2006 23:13

it's difficult isn't it? you read conflicting advice from everyone and unless you have some kind of scientific knowledge of how it all works then how you can make an informed decision?

Heathcliffscathy · 12/07/2006 23:14

scroll down to the harvard study linking flouridated water to bone cancer in boys and the nobel scientist claiming that flouride is dangerous
