short but horrible period pain

After spending the last 30 mins on the floor in the bathroom at work (yuck!) I wondered if anyone else has the same kind of period pain as me - It usually comes on quite quickly, lasts for around 30 mins and is excrutiatingly painful - all I can do is lie down on the floor trying not to scream and let it pass. I would vomit if I tried to speak. I get really really hot too - and by the end of it I am usually cold. The pain kind of comes in waves - about 15 mins of non-stop pain then it goes away for a few seconds, comes back for a shorter period of time and so on til finally one time it just doesn't come back. I've had this since I was a teenager and am now 31 with no dc. It happens a few days before my period starts and I can never predict it. Once on my period I get virtually no pain whatsoever (I know I'm relatively lucky compared to some people!) It occurs less frequently when I'm fit and healthy but still happens once every 2 or 3 months. It usually happens in the morning, but today randomly attacked in the afternoon! argh! any advice?

I would ask your GP for a referral to a gynae as something is causing this and it is certainly in your interests to find out what it is.

I could be wrong here but my initial thought was endometriosis given that this has happened since you were a teen. Also I have suffered with period pain not too dissimilarly to how you describe this now and endometriosis in my case was diagnosed.

Any symptoms that are cyclical in nature and that get worse up to and including menses should be checked further to see if endometriosis is present.

I would keep a daily pain and symptom diary in the meantime as this will also give the gynae clues.

Do not put up with this, seek proper medical help from a specialist. GPs are not always up to speed when it comes to such issues. I would have to advise you though that endometriosis if it is there is not picked up on any blood test or internal ultrasound scan, it is usually diagnosed through a keyhole surgery op called a laparoscopy.

www.endo.org.uk is a good website.
