Wisdom tooth removal.

The dentist is referring me to have two wisdom teeth out under general anaesthetic (which my phone just changed to "eternal anaesthetic" Hmm)

What do I expect afterwards? I have a phobia of dentists anyway, but I'd feel far happier if I had some real life experience? Pain? Bruising? Someone told me years ago they had to have their jaw broken which isn't helping either.

bundaberg · 20/11/2013 18:53

have you been referred because they are they your lower ones? or because of your phobia?

i had one of my upper ones out at the dentists, just with regular injection and it was absolutely fine, no worse than any other tooth extraction.

it really depends how difficult the extraction is as to whether you'll have after effects tbh.

Watching with interest. I have my 2 lowers due out under local in a couple of weeks. Mine are fairly impacted very close to my nerves. Completely bricking it.

I had all four out at once under GA. I seem to remember bleeding for quite a while afterwards and got puffy chipmunk cheeks. But no broken jaw or black eyes.

pinkbear82 · 20/11/2013 19:15

I had my bottom two out about 10 years ago, under ha at the hospital. Sore, achy jaw and the normal ache from teeth being taken out.
Slight hamster cheeks for a few days but other wise I was fine.

Have you had GA before? It makes me very teary when I come round, you could tell me the happiest thing and I'd still be in floods!

WhereBeThatBlackbirdTo · 20/11/2013 19:17

I've only had one wisdom tooth out, under local. It was an awkward bugger and the trainee dental nurse had a good peer as the dentist took it out!

No pain during or after though. But just one word of advice - don't blow raspberries in the evening after you have it done.

Big mistake < ow >!

TapirbackFucker · 20/11/2013 19:24

One thing that may help is to take (if you can) ibuprofen beforehand, so that the drug is already in your system when the teeth are removed. It'll help to keep the swelling down.

Parliamo · 20/11/2013 19:28

I had bottom two out under GA and ended up with a bleed (minor panic!) and staying in overnight, infection, 10 days off work. I looked like a hamster and had bruises down to my chest. I think thats a bit extreme though. My brother had his removed, was back at work the next day with a couple of Cocodamol.

Still glad I had them out though, my teeth feel less squashed and no more infections.

Good luck!

Lamu · 20/11/2013 19:32

Bugger, I'll probably only be able to have a small dose of paracetamol given that I'll be 4 months pregnant. I assume you can't eat solid food for a couple of days after?

Mrsmorton · 20/11/2013 19:34

They do NOT BREAK YOUR JAW. Why this myth persists I have no idea. It's on a par with the knee on the chest one. OP, the posts on here are all fairly accurate and you are definitely better off without them. It made me feel so much better, sleep better, eat without pain just betterer.

Lamu · 20/11/2013 19:34

OMG parliamo that sounds horrific!

Mrsmorton · 20/11/2013 19:34

You can eat whatever food you feel like. I had bangers and mash (bonfire night) after mine Grin

pinkbear82 · 20/11/2013 19:37

You may find they let you have codeine for pain if the paracetamol doesn't help. I had codeine when 5 months pregnant and in hospital (not teeth related!) dd is now almost 6 months and absolutely fine

Bumply · 20/11/2013 19:42

I had mine out under local anaesthetic. Top ones knocked out easily, the bottom ones were hard work for the dentist who wished I'd had a ga.
It was fine during the removal - the anesthetic was v powerful. Afterwards it ached for quite a while - they gave me extra strong painkillers and I think antibiotics. I got in a job lot of ice lollies to suck on as coolness helped with the ache/pain. All in all it was MUCH better than the pain of infected gums which had led to the removal (wisdom teeth didn't have enough room to come through fully and I kept getting infections under the flap of gum that covered the half that showed)

Lamu · 20/11/2013 19:45

Sorry i've hijacked your thread Op. Blush
Amazing, thanks everyone! At least my healthy burgerdiet won't be affected. I'll make sure to ask about codeine too.

Parliamo · 20/11/2013 19:54

Lamu- It was pretty grim, but it didn't put my boyfriend of six weeks off! We still went away that weekend even though I needed crutches to hold my fat cheeks up and could only eat soup and yoghurts. We got married the following year! If he still fancied me when I looked like a jaundiced hamster...

Co codamol is definitely fine when you are pregnant, had it during all three pregnancies for SPD. Good luck to you too, my experience was not the norm, and if they haven't talked to you about a general it must be a straight forward extraction. The consultant I saw could tell from the x ray it would be tricky and wouldn't do it under local

wundawoman · 20/11/2013 20:05

I had all 4 out under GA when I was 40, after 20 odd years of procrastination and fear of getting them out. Wish I had done it years earlier, would have saved me much pain and suffering!!!

When I came out of GA I was fine, just needed a couple of paracetemol. No horrendous swelling either. Ate soft foods for a few days.

You are much better to get rid, if they are troublesome. Good luck Wink

Lamu · 20/11/2013 20:09

The consultant advised me to have it under general but I fell pregnant whilst waiting for an appointment. [Hmm] And they wouldn't do general whilst I'm pregnant. They've since agreed to do local but only take out the 2 lowers which are less problematic and deal with the uppers at a later date. It's got to be done, so I better just grin and bear it. Grin

Yea meglet nice one Hmm that's just the sort of language the phobic OP needs isn't it. Hacked out FFS. You're not a HCP are you?

weaselm4 · 20/11/2013 20:47

Had a lower impacted one out a week ago under local.

The anaesthetic was brilliant, and although I've been feeling under the weather, the pain really hasn't been too bad (and I'm a real wimp when it comes to pain!).

Wishing you the very best of luck. I'm sure they're better out than in Grin

MimsyBorogroves · 20/11/2013 21:31

Thanks everyone.

General anaesthetic because they're impacted - one upper, one lower (both at the same side) and the lower gets awfully infected.

I tend to vomit profusely after GA. Lucky, lucky dentists.

Sorry for putting my foot in it. Have reported my post.

Parliamo · 20/11/2013 21:40

At least with a general you won't hear/ see the dentist! It will be worth it, honestly. Hope it goes well.
