Racing heart after exercise

Today after cycling rather energetically up a hill (a hill I cycle up regularly to get into town) I had a really funny turn once I stopped: racing heart (I could hear it pounding), light-headedness etc. Even after I had my breath back my heart was still pounding and it is really odd. Luckily the people I had gone to see were really nice to me and gave me something to eat and drink to see if that would help. It did stop.

I've had a turn like this before, about three times I think (always after vigorous exercise). I am quite fit: zumba every week, I cycle everywhere, walk fast etc. I'm hoping this is just nothing to worry about but it is quite frightening when it happens as my heart feels as if it wants to jump out of my chest and I now feel really tired and spacy. Wish I could just take a nap but children to look after. Anyone else ever experienced this? Just need reassurance I think.

I think it's just "overdoing it". I feel similar if I really beast myself with any exercise.

Hmm. To be honest, if it happens frequently but not consistently and you don't think it's just generally from exercise I'd have a chat to my GP about it. Next time it happens try taking your pulse (check what time it is) then note what time it is when your heart calms down.

Oh well I hope so! I've googled it and the general consensus is that so long as it stops shortly after it starts it is nothing to worry about.

Low blood sugar can cause it in me - and once I focus on it it gets worse.

Other possibilities - I can also get rapid heart flutters and weakness after exercise if I am a bit anaemic or my thyroid is under or over replaced as I am hypothyroid.

Becky do you know what your HR is before you exercise, during and after? The figures would help decide between a normal rise due to exercise and an exercise intolerant inappropriate increase

Are you anaemic? Low iron levels can lead to palpitations.
