YUK YUK, found a huge head lice on DD this morning, thought it was a fly stuck in her hair.

What do I do now? The poor little mite still has bad cradle cap, now this. I can't see any others moving around but think I may have spotted some dark coloured egg things. I hate the idea of covering her head in chemicals but seem to recall reading about a new product that is effective without chemicals, does anyone know what that is?
Or shall I just comb and condition like I've read on here previously? How often? Every day? Also, I can't see on my other DD but should I treat her just in case, and what about us?

Sorry, so many questions, but this is all new to me. Should I mention it to the teachers?

If you cant see anymore, chances are it has only recently been there (from someone elses head) but bear in mind each lice lays on averahe 8 eggs every 24 hours, so act quick, go through with a nit comb and conditioner, then sprey her hair with watered down tee tree oil from the chemist.

Condition and comb every 3rd day for 2 weeks and you'll break the headlousey life cycle (they get combed out before they are big enough to reproduce, and in 14 days the ones which are eggs now will be gone and you can stop the psychosomatic scratching).
Yes, I would treat both dds, and yourself/dh/dp/granny, etc.

spray w/neem oil.

sandyballs · 13/07/2006 10:28

I wet combed her hair last night and got 5 live lice out, but there are quite a few dark coloured eggs at the base of the hairs, round the ears and neck. The nit comb did nothing to these. Do I have to remove them by hand or is there something else that will do it. I brought a conditioner called Nice n Clear which contains neem oil, lavender and tea tree so hopefully the smell might put off others joining. Did the other DD as well. I wish they were boys so I could just shave their heads.

Oh, god, I found lice on my DS1's head exactly the same way - I thought it was a fly, as I'd never seen lice before.

Don't worry, it passes. Comb and condition, as others have said.

If spraying the hair with tea tree oil as a prevention do you just buy a bottle of the oil and then dilute some of it or all of it? in a little squirty bottle? would that do?
Getting quite paranoid as dd quite often comes home from school with a note saying that there is a problem in her class, which is against protocol but the school obviously feel so strongly they by pass it and send us a note.

I always check her hair but I like this idea of spraying on tea tree oil just in case.

you can get v good tea tree shampoo and conditioner which we use on the ds's in hope of deterring them.... not sure it works though. the new treatment you asked about in the op is called hederin, from chemists. not cheap but v good and easy to use (i cant bear all that bloomin combing and my boys HATE it. havent dared research to see if it is a bad thing.... for fear of finding out.
