Dealing PMT in a teenager

My 15yo DD is, I think, suffering from really bad PMT. Two months ago, she had an episode lasting about 10 days where she was in tears every day, hysterical about something everyday, got into huge trouble at school, swore at us (she doesn't normally), etc etc. Once her period arrived, she was calm, polite and normal. Last month, she did have similar symptoms but only for a day or two. Now, with her period due next week, she has started again with the hysterics, crying, temper, etc.

She is on the pill for acne, and I know I have asked the dr in the past if it just regulates your own cycle or completely replaces it, and I think he said completely replaces it. So I don't really understand how her body could know that she will finish her packet soon.

If she goes on like this, I fear for her mental health, her future career, her education, her relationships....she has started going out with a new BF and last night said she wanted to break it off. I told her that if this is PMT, she will have to be aware of what she is doing/feeling during these bouts, and advised her to wait until next week before she takes a big decision about anything.

Can anyone recommend a good book about this, or what has helped them? I've seen there are other threads on PMT but a lot seem to be about how this happened after having DC. Apologies if people have already gone over this, links appreciated, thank you!

Anyone? Also keen to know if it can actually be diagnosed rather than just, "I think this might be..."

Is she on the progesterone only pill? It does sound as if the pill might have triggered this anyway. Have you read this?

Last paragraph of the heading 'what Causes PMS' may be useful. Might be worth visiting another doctor, maybe FP clinic for someone with detailed knowledge of all the different pills.

Thanks Matilda, I just read that page. Funnily enough, the pill they mention that might help is the one that she is on! I think she would resist coming off the pill, because she had exceptionally painful periods before, plus her acne was very bad. It's hard to tell of course because it could have developed anyway.
