Hi,my ds(3yrs.)loves swimming & took him up till recently to mum & child swimming class @ local pool. But have decided to stop taking cos every time he is swimming he is up all night that night coughing & needing his inhaler. We have tried other pools, incase he's ok swimming there but its the same story up all night coughing!Have tried giving him his inhaler before going into water & again when class finished (apparently this is supposed to help)but it didn't make any diff.I don't think it's so much excercise induced asthma symptons (cos he can run about for hours & not cough)but upon looking into things & by process of elimination over time think it seems to be the chlorine that could be causing this cough .There is quite a bit of info.re. chlorine & asthma but I don;t know if any of it is actually proven.G.P originally dismissed any probs re swimming causing cough.Anyway wondered if anyone had heard of or had experience of similar problem re coughing after swimming & did u stop going swimming/keep going swimming or do u know of anything that helps this .Ds keeps asking when he can go swimming again which is shame but the sleepless nights we suffer after he's been to pool made us decide to forget about swimming for time being. Also wanted to go to Oasis center parcs again this year for hols. as we & kids had such brill.time last year but as anyone who's been knows big heated pools are one of the main things there & keep kids amused for couple hrs. each day so don't seem much point in going if can't take ds in pool.or maybe I'm just being silly & should still go.Would appreciate anyones thoughts/advice onthis! (Blimey ,wish Icould condense these messages Ipost on mumsnet I ramble on for ages.sorry!!.

My boys attended swimming classes for asthmatics, but didn't show those symptoms, Ronyag. I know that recent research is regarded as being a bit chicken and egg-ish ie are children becoming asthmatic because they are swimming or are they swimming because they are asthmatic? Have you contacted Asthma Campaign ? They might be able to shed some light on it for you.

The pool at our local health club is ozone rather than chlorine. Might be worth doing a local search to see if there's an ozone pool anywhere. Even if its in a private health club - may be if you explained your predicament they might let you give it a try as a one off then at least you'd know if it was the chlorine or something to do with activity in water generally.

Don't know where you live but if you say an area someone on here might know of an ozone pool.
