Does the coil have a good success rate? I can't go on the pill because i have a history of blood pressure. I need something that is as safe as possible - I do NOT want to get pregnant!

yes, that's the one I've been using too - but don't know how long I'll be allowed to use this method!!

i have a copper coil and its been problem free (apart from the first one fell out but it was noticed immediately! wasnt sore or anything really)

would recommend it

cremolafoam · 11/07/2006 17:38

i too am in the same predicament and have been offered condoms or a hysterectomy.
great choice then....

snuffy143 · 11/07/2006 17:38

Want a permanent solution...can recommend endometrial ablation (for me AND no periods!!) and a vasectomy for DH. Really puts the spontaneity back! And the mess!

Sugarmagnolia · 11/07/2006 17:44

I don't know the answer but am on the same search as you. Am desperate to let my body get back to it's normal rhythms but equally (maybe more) desperate not to get pregnant. I'm 99.9999% sure we are done with our family and may make the decision to be sterilised in the next year or so but feel I am not quite there yet. I don't want a copper coil because I understand it can lead to really heavy periods. We haven't had much luck with condoms - DH says he can't feel anything - but are still experimenting. Another thread on here a while ago recommended trying Durex Avanti as they are supposed to feel much better. In the mean time it's abstinence for us as well. DH is being very good but I feel guilty and don't want him to have to wait too long for me to make a decision.

nailpolish · 11/07/2006 17:45

i have to say, i have a copper coil and my periods are pretty normal, i had heavy ones for the first 4 or 5 but it died down

Sugarmagnolia · 11/07/2006 17:45

snuffy - what is endometrial ablation - I thought it was just a treatment for fibroids? Is it garaunteed to permanently sterilise you as well? How does it compare with getting your tubes tied?

lou33 · 11/07/2006 17:53

sterilisation

desperatehousewife · 11/07/2006 17:55

sterilisation too final to be an option at the moment.

Def don't want heavier periods...

Had an endometrial ablation last May (microwave probe on lining of uterus...burns it away so no regrowth of blood vessels...bit like pouring a kettle of boiling water on an ant hill on a lawn!) as treatment for heavy and painful periods. Was absolutely fabulous...minor day surgery, bit of weeping discharge for a week...90% of ladies have success and a certain percentage (me!!!!!) get no period at all! Ever! Again! Was so depressed at the though of having them for another 25 years, every 21 days for NO reason! And it leaves the uterus lining unable to sustain a pregnancy...marvellous for me!

nailpolish · 11/07/2006 20:39

desp house, a copper coil is worth a try IMO

Sugarmagnolia · 12/07/2006 07:08

snuffy - But you said your DH had a vasectomy as well. So for someone who's partner was still fertile, could you in theory keep getting pregnant, only it would end in miscarriage every time? Because if memory serves, the embryo grows for a while before implanting itself in the lining of the uterus. Sounds like a great solution to heavy periods, but maybe not a complete contraceptive on it's own - would that be right?

JennT · 12/07/2006 07:59

Now you're getting theological. Implantation is when the fertilised embryo attaches to lining of womb and only then do you get the hormones saying you are pregnant. Depends if you are Catholic or not as to deciding if you have started life before implantation. Lots of periods happen when fertilised egg has not been implanted.

hoxtonchick · 12/07/2006 08:38

i'm very pleased with my copper coil. no periods, but that's 'cos i'm still bf. i've had it in almost a year now, & no problems at all.

how are things dhw? did you get a referral to st mary's (i saw l. regan years ago, for a different gynae thing & she was lovely)? hope you're ok. xxx

desperatehousewife · 12/07/2006 09:09

hi hoxton - yes i'm ok thanks. Am seeing prof regan at end of september. Am also seeing my consultant soon with post mortem results. Strangely though this time i'm not gagging for answers. I have also had a bit of a revelation in that I don't think I want more children. I just want to enjoy the one wonderful one I have already got and just put everything behind me and concentrate on me and my lovely family.

This is why I need to find a very safe contracetive!

I got a diaphragm and use it w/spermacide.

We're not a super fertile couple together, I can't do hormones and don't want a copper coil, so this is working for us just now.

It's not for hte squeamish, however, and you need to be at a steady weight.

desperatehousewife · 12/07/2006 09:20

tried caps before and didn't really get on with it. will research coil i think.
