There is this magic stuff you can get from the chemist which is like a cement type cream that really works excellently. Can't remember the name and I'm not sure that it's suitable for kids.
Fwiw - I often get mouth ulcers if I eat something with MSG in it.

7up · 11/07/2006 07:34

carmenere,am i being dumb whats MSG?

he'll have to go to school like it and manage for the day, although i wouldnt if my mouth looked that sore. praps i should let him go late and get the stuff first do you think, hes at primary

Monosodium glutamate, it's a flavour enhancer that is in lots of chinese food and savoury snacks so it's quite common.

What I would do is bring him to the chemists on the way to school and see if they could give him something, poor little fellow, there is nothing quite like the pain of mouth ulcers ouch!

harpsichordcarrier · 11/07/2006 07:59

oh dear
my dd1 currently has a big one on the side of her mouth (she's three) and it's just so miserable.
take him to the pharmacist, and see what they can give him. I also rinse my mouth out with salt water (yucky but it works) and also I try and eat marmite as I think the vit B helps.
Vit B and zinc supplements can help, not sure what would be recommended at his age?

7up · 11/07/2006 08:22

thanks for advice, im goingto go chemist at 9 and then call into school and give whatever i buy to him. its weird because my mum and brother get them also, my elder brother really suffers. but me, dad and sis dont get them luckily

In our house we put a dab of salt on them.Stings like a whatname but gets rid of them really fast.

notsogummyanymore · 11/07/2006 09:13

bonjela is fab. my sister used to get them all the time and that's what she used.

misdee · 11/07/2006 09:17

dd1 had one last week, and i didnt have any benjela so used some calpol teething gel. she said that helped.

MeAndMyBoy · 11/07/2006 09:18

For DS we use Anbesol which is an anastheic liquid - is very effective at taking the pain away. The cement stuff is Adcortyl in orabase - think that's how it's spelt. Slap it on and it forms a crust over the ulcer.

Also rinsted pastiles is another option that I always use.

Poor chap hope he feels better soon.

southeastastra · 11/07/2006 10:19

i always use neat salt

waterfalls · 11/07/2006 10:21

Does he eat alot of tomatoes? they cause ulcers in some people.

calvemjoe · 11/07/2006 10:24

Toothpaste containing sodium laureth sulphate (sp?) is supposed to cause them (well it does for me anyway) so I try to avoid them and get an ulcer if I use toothpaste containing it.

tubismybub · 11/07/2006 10:29

I suffered with them for years they are the worst thing in the world. Turned out it was too much caffeine causing them i only ever get them if i drink coffee now. would be worth seeing if anything in his diet causes them.

southeastastra · 11/07/2006 10:32

yes! i always get them after eating boiled sweets, or drinking particularly bad wine

hub2dee · 11/07/2006 10:33

waterfalls - I always seemed to get them after toms as a kid (not now), but thought my theory was baloney... interesting to hear about the toms triggering ulcers !

southeastastra · 11/07/2006 10:35

anything acidic causes them in me

mawbroon · 11/07/2006 10:43

Oh the poor chap. My sympathies. I use teething gel. Stings like buggery at first until the anaesthetic kicks in a gives a bit of relief.

7up · 11/07/2006 12:32

hi all, thanks for replies, got some of the cement stuff that carmenere mentioned, strange name cant remember it!was in so much rush to get to the school to give it to ds.

he was really worried about putting it on, bless, but very pleased when it didnt sting and it literally set like cement. one much happier boy. when he comes home il post what its called, def better than bonjela as this one didnt hurt to apply at all

Has he been eating a lot of strawberries? I find they often cause mouth ulcers, in me and in ds. Shame, really, as we both love them.
