What can I do for a 4 month old baby with a cough?

He's fully breast fed, and has a hacking cough and runny nose. I think his throat must be sore, as his voice sounds wrong, too.
I'm giving calpol. Is there anything else I can do, as he's fairly miserable.

Jasnem, you could put a few drops of olbus oil (sp?) on sheet to help breathing. also if it is waking him up you could raise one end of matress so that his head is sloped up from his body. hope he gets better soon.

we used a plug in vapour thing and when it was really bad i put a humidifier in his room both of which seemed to help............ occassionally we would give him medised (paracetamol with an anti histamine) i dont think it really stopped him getting blocked up but it did seem to help him settle better.......... not sure if you can use medised on a 4 month old as ds was 6 months when we started having problems.

Run lots of hot water in the bathroom so it gets really steamy and sit in there with him for a bit. Keep breastfeeding. Poor little thing! Also, let him sleep in your arms so he's not horizontal. I'd avoid the calpol too, but that's me.

You could try Medised that can be taken from 3 months. It will dry up the runny nose and sort out any cold like symptons.

sounds like hayfever.

have you thought about homeopathy?

Jasnem · 10/07/2006 20:46

Thank you all.
I'll be buying olbas oil and medised tomorrow (may not use drugs unless he gets worse but I guess it'll be useful to have around in case)

I'm not giving regular calpol(2.5 ml today and yesterday).
He's gone to bed ok, so I just hope he doesn't wake himself up coughing.

I've been thinking hayfever actually, but wasn't sure babies that young got it.
DP and I both do, though, so it wouldn't be a surprise.
Do you know anything suitable, or should I take him to see a homeopath ( the only one I know of locally has sessions weekly on Thursdays)
