Hair falling out. Taking iron, what else?

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 12/11/2013 21:51

The only time before my hair was falling out like this was after the pregnancy. It didn't however cause for my scalp to be visible. Shock

I can see at the frontline that it is just few of them! I think it
Stopped falling out at that rate but can I grow my hair back? I'm taking ferritin and the iron levels were 23 and after a month gone up to 35. Thyroid results very healthy, right bang in the middle.

Do any of those sh apropos like Regaine really work?

Watching with interest. Mine is the same, really worried and nothing else to blame on other than the fact that after a loooong break (10 yrs or so) I've recently started dying my hair again.

HeyJudith · 12/11/2013 22:30

Can you afford to see a tricologist? They do more specialised analysis of your hair, sometimes you can be deficient in a unique combination of minerals for example, (I saw this on an Embarassing Bodies type programme all about hair). this is more specialist than thyroid/iron testing from the doctors. Maybe worth looking into than spending ££ on topical treatments that do absolutely nothing?

FWIW, my hair only really improved with Perfectil (but not Nourkirin or similar). I don't know about Regaine though.

My hair was falling out. Stopped when I removed the copper coil. Piuh.

HeyJudith · 12/11/2013 22:32

khm dying hair tends to cause it to break off at varying lengths which makes the volume physically less, but not to shed at the root (thus showing scalp).

Most weak or fine hair can't take any kind of chemical treatment without snapping. I don't know what I'll do when I start going grey :(

khm1998 · 12/11/2013 22:54

HeyJudith - thanks for that, it makes a lot of sense. I think my hair does a combination of both, which makes it look as if I was losing loads. It's probably less of the losing from the scalp and more of the breaking off. The texture has also become crap so, again, I think it's safe to blame it on the hair dye. Needless to say I am switching to a different brand or going to a salon next time.

To the OP - start taking vitamin D!!!

CoteDAzur · 12/11/2013 23:00

Start taking a Vitamin B complex.

Do you avoid carbs like bread, pasta & rice, by any chance?

CoteDAzur · 12/11/2013 23:03

How exactly is Vitamin D supposed to help with falling hair?

Megbeth · 13/11/2013 02:51

Zinc, Silica & Biotin are good for hair loss. Best to see your Dr for blood tests as thyroid imbalance & other conditions can cause hair loss.

pipsqueak · 13/11/2013 03:02

Interested in the comment above re carbs - mine began to fall out around the time a I began low carbing . I think it has stopped now I am back on carbs but not sure quite yet . I take viviscal but one a day instead of 2 as recommended on packet - have noticed slight improvement in quality of hair and nails loads better . It is horrible and since this has been happening to me I have noticed it much more in others and it seems reasonably common - hope you find something that helps x

CoteDAzur · 13/11/2013 09:23

Yes, cutting out complex carbohydrates (i.e. "low-carbing") is related to hair loss because they are rich in Vitamin Bs that are important to hair & skin health.

Naicecuppatea · 13/11/2013 11:09

My hair loss also started with a low carb diet, sadly hasn't stopped since (a year and a half later) despite eating normally now. Be careful with lowcarbing!

CoteDAzur · 13/11/2013 12:20

It might be an idea to start a thread in the Low Carb topic about this.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 13/11/2013 12:54

Thank you all for your messages. Hmmm, not sure about low carving as such in my case but for a while I advert little due to lack of time but also sudden 2 stone, hormone related weight gain.

For a while I didn't eat carbs in the evenings but I would during the day. A month ago
I stopped eating bread cakes or occasional pizza do not count obv but I do it pots, rice and pasta.

Cote - to answer your question... (as per vitaminddeficiencyhairloss.net/

How can a vitamin D deficiency cause hair loss?

In order to understand how vitamin D deficient hair loss is caused, it's important to know about the cycles of hair growth and shedding.

There are, essentially, three phases within the process of hair growth regulation, which is often referred to as hair-follicle cycling.

The three phases are: anagen, catagen, and telogen. The anagen phase is when your hair grows, the catagen phase is when your hair stops growing, and the telogen phase is when your hair reaches it's dead state.

However, if you are vitamin d deficient, then these cycles can become interrupted or altered. For instance, one phase may become longer while another is dramatically shortened. This can lead to Vitamin D deficient hair loss, as the phases of hair-follicle cycling are being impeded.

CoteDAzur · 15/11/2013 21:29

That's very interesting, thanks. I read more since then and apparently the deficiency of any vitamin can cause hair loss.

FamiliesShareGerms · 15/11/2013 21:34

Try the L'Oreal shampoo and conditioner for "fragile hair prone to falling". It's called x3 or something, with "arginine". It is seriously good. I've always moulted lots, but saw a difference after the first time I used it, and after a month my hair is noticeably thicker because I'm not losing so much.

(Disclaimer - shampoo isn't a substitute to proper medical intervention!)
