I have baffled the doctor

Just returned from GP. I have a very tender place behind my ear and across the back of my head about 3 inches from start to finish. Ver painful especially when lying down or if touched. Taking paracetemol for the pain.

GP did thorough exam, looked in ears took temperature etc and then consulted colleague in next room. Came back and started googling on PC. I asked if it could be shingles starting even though I have had it 4 days and no signs of blisters. He said it could be but we will have to wait and see.

My DH is starting another course of chemo this week and am worried about infecting him with anything I might have. GP just said mention it to his doctor at hospital.

Any suggestions apart from wait and see?

Do you have a young baby? I had something similar when DS was 6 months old, or so. Shooting pains on one side of my face and in my hair. My hair sometimes felt like it was moving. It cleared up by itself a month later and we never got to the bottom of it. It did coincide with DS's hair pulling phase, so one theory was nerve damage to the scalp that eventually cleared up by itself when the pulling stopped.

Keep going back to the GP - they will refer you eventually if it's an ongoing problem.

HI With GPs its a process of elimination. They will check its nothing serious but I've had a few times when the Dr isn't sure what was wrong other than 'nothing serious'. Though I am interested in nancerama's post. I had exactly the same thing - started on holiday when my DD2 was about 4 months old. My friend had exactly the same thing. My friend had her wisdom teeth taken out and hers went. Mine just went after about 6 months (and a filling tho Dentist said this wasn't the cause). The Dr had me back several times and he could only think it was neuralgia (trigeminal neuralgia) but I believe that is on the face, not sure if it extends behind the ear. He also tried to give me something for the pain which was also an antidepressant but I got a bit offended by that. Though I do believe the drug he was suggesting is good for pain.

Yes, trigeminal neuralgia was what they suspected I had. I was prescribed something that helped, but it also turned me into a zombie. It turned out to be one of the (legal) substances Kerry Katona was on at the height of her troubles.

I'm all out of wisdom teeth, and no dental problems - total mystery. You have my sympathies though. It is properly awful :(
