Manky mouth infection, very painful :o(

I have come down with flu, again which I'm not too bothered about in itself because I know I'll get over in it in a couple of days ad I always get any bugs that are going around.

However I have another rather horrible symptom which I don't know what to do about. One half of my mouth has swollen up and become really inflamed, I have little ulcers all over my gums and the inside of my cheek and all the tissue is really mushy and dark red. It bloody hurts and I can't eat.

I do look after my teeth, use floss and mouthwash and all that jazz, I don't know why I've got this infection. I'm not registered with a dentist - I made enquiries last year because I wanted to get ds1 a check-up and was told (by the NHS helpline) that we would have to go to Wellington in Somerset; we live in Exeter and have no car )

Any advice on getting rid of painful mouth inflammation? Am a bit but what the heck...

PS - I have a big cold sore too. Just too add to the general aura of self-pity

Poor you, it sounds awful.

It sounds like an abscess - my mum gets these from time to time and the symptoms are very similar. Is there an emergency dentist near you? (often based at a hospital, I believe)

My mum lives in Exeter too btw - can ask her re her dentist/vacancies if you'd like

Oh yes, thanks Mercy - dh says that there is actually a dental access centre at the hospital not too far from us. I actually went there when I was pregnant with ds1, but I'd forgotten. I think I'll ring them in the morning rather than bother your mum, but I might get back to you if they can't see me.

Thanks

No problem, hope you get it sorted out asap.

Sounds like you're a bit run down atm. Get yourself some echinacea!

Greensleeves · 09/07/2006 17:33

They sell echinacea in the wholefood shop I shop in, but I don't know what it's for

camomile and sage are both good herbs for gums, teeth and inflammation.

Papillon · 09/07/2006 17:36

Greensleeves · 09/07/2006 17:39

Wow, thanks Papillon - have got sage growing so will chuck some in with some lemon balm and see what happens
