***FAIRLY URGENT DENTAL QUESTION*** When do kids lose their first tooth ? Pls answer !!!

NomDePlume · 09/07/2006 11:40

I was brushing DD's teeth this morning and she squealed and told me that her front tooth was 'going to come out soon'. When I'd finished her teeth I checked the tooth and it is wobbly (not massively, but certainly wobbly), she is 4 next month . Surely it is too early for this ???

The tooth itself is a little grey (not black, but greyish tinged), has been for around 8 months or so. It is her left hand top front tooth. I was under the impression that this was fairly common in milk teeth ? I wasn't expecting it fall out though, certainly not this soon. I can't get her to a dentist until next week (for obv reasons).

Please answer. Thanks.

that is early.
ds lost his first one at 5.
he too had a grey tooth.he had fallen and bashed it quite badly and the dentist said that effectively the tooth was 'dead' hence the grey colour.it doesn't do any harm.
get her checked out when the dentist opens but don't worry too much.

NomDePlume · 09/07/2006 11:47

AFAIK, she hasn't bashed the tooth/her mouth in such a way that could 'kill' the tooth. Can it just happen spontaneously ?

My daughter lost her first tooth at 4 and most of her other teeth soon after. Her 2nd set are nearly all through and she is only 7. Its not common but not unusual or anything to worry about either.

alexsmum · 09/07/2006 11:51

no idea nomdeplume.sorry i can't be more help.
when ds bashed it , we realy knew about it ifyswim.the gum bled and he was in a lot of pain.
i wouldn't worry but would def get it checked out.

NotAnOtter · 09/07/2006 11:52

if the tooth is grey then it will have been damaged at some point - it sounds like it could be on the way out . usually i would be expecting tooth loss 6 ish but have known ist loss in an 8 year old...hth

NomDePlume · 09/07/2006 11:53

Thanks PNut & alexsmum. I'll get her an emergency appt at the dentist asap, for the peace of mind as much as anything else.

wise to have it checked out in any case - for your own peace of mind.

albosmum · 09/07/2006 12:26

go to the dentist - ds2 had a held on to a grey tooth for almost 6 months but it was effectively dead, eventually it started tio hurt we took him to the dentist to get it pulled before risk of infection set in. DSs was because of bump he also knocked one clean out at same time - so your dd could have knocked it months ago

SlightlyFamiliarPeachyClair · 09/07/2006 12:51

DS2 was 5 and a day when he lost his first.

So four not that way out?

NomDePlume · 09/07/2006 15:25

I guess not, peachy, but DD is 3.11, it felt early. Thanks for your help guys

Girl is DS's nursery class has lost her first one and she is 4. What age did she get teeth? Apparently the earlier they get them, the earlier they lose them?

NomDePlume · 09/07/2006 15:29

About 3/4 months, so not massively early, KR.
