I leave for school at 7.30am and get back at 16.00pm and I don't drink or eat all day at school. is this really bad that I don't go to the toilet in this time? could it really damage me? I am 17 and female.

You need to start eating and drinking! Why aren't you?

starships1996 · 07/11/2013 19:18

I have social anxiety which makes it hard for to eat in front of others. I don't know how to overcome it. ):

It really isn't good for you not to eat or drink for such a long period of time. Why do you do this?

Bunbaker · 07/11/2013 19:20

Sorry, cross posted. Is there someone at school who can help you with this - learning mentor, tutor, counsellor?

starships1996 · 07/11/2013 19:23

thanks for replying.I did tell a teacher at school but she just thinks it is a simple thing to just eat and just tells me to bring lunch in and just eat it when I really can not do this.):

DD's high school has a counsellor who comes in a few lunchtimes a week and I'm sure she would have to deal with similar problems. I presume you are year 12 or 13. Is there a learning mentor/head of year you could ask?

starships1996 · 07/11/2013 20:16

I don't know who my head of year is......I guess I could ask about the school counsellor.

Have a look on the school website. It might list all the senior leadership team. Do you have a virtual learning environment on the website as well? If you do it will have useful contact information.

I do hope you get this problem sorted soon

thank you (:

I agree you need help with this, but in the meantime can you not eat or drink in a private place, away from everyone else?

I find that both being thirsty and being hungry make any anxiety I'm feeling much worse. So once you start to get on top of this you might start to feel better.

geologygirl · 07/11/2013 22:01

Have you got any help from your GP? Or perhaps the school can help with a room that you can have your meals in etc. You definitely need support to deal with this because it cant be doing you any good.

Are you getting help with the anxiety etc?

Social anxiety can be hellish to have to cope with so you have my sympathies. There are things that will help though. Firstly you do need to find a way to drink and preferably eat too during the day. Is there a teacher or member of staff that you can confide in, they might be able to suggest a quiet place where you can go and eat and drink on your own if you need to.
The next thing to think about is getting the social anxiety sorted out. Do go and speak to your GP, they can refer you for treatment to the right service. The best treatment for social anxiety is a kind of therapy called cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT). It is really really effective at reducing anxiety.
Anxiety problems like this are really common, so please don't worry about asking for help - your GP will have come across this a thousand times before.
There are also some good self help resources online too - check out Moodgym website.
I work with young people who have anxiety problems and most young people recover really well from bad anxiety, particularly if they can have CBT. Best wishes.

Can you go talk to the head if upper school or a school counsellor. Explain you can't eat at school and why. Ask if they can pro use you with somewhere quiet to eat instead. .

Not drinking is likely to leave you dehydrated and feeling pretty crummy by the end of the day, and yes, regularly doing that will damage your kidneys. Agree with all the advice you have been given above. As a first measure, could you have a bottle of water in your bag and nip to the toilets between lessons for a drink?

Hi starships, I can see you've started 8 threads today, are you in a bit of a slump at the moment?

I think the best thing you could do with regards to most of your questions on here is to get some proper help/advice from your GP if you are comfortable enough to do that?

I sounded very similar to you tonight on many occasions 12 years ago, in fact, I still do now if a bottle of wine has got the best of me!

You need to work out a way for you to be comfortable at home, at college and in general surroundings, not only to eat and drink but to feel a bit of self worth. You seem very down on yourself.

Please try to talk to someone properly about all of your issues.
