sorry to be groos but does asthma cause a lot of phlegm and is being phlegmy anything to bother about?
basically ds2 was coughing up green yukky stuff earlier in the week and was given antibiotics although he was absolutely fine and happy in himself. He had been a little bit wheezy and had been having salbutamol aswell.
he isn't wheezy anymore and the phlegm has turned pale yellowish although still sounds full of it.
now, he also has prednisolone tablets which i can give him but haven't done so far.
should i just leave him as he is or does phlegm = get on the steroids.

please help!
cheers

My nephew has asthma, and his chest has been terrible following a cold and of course the heat too, my SIL took his to G.P thinking he may need steroids but was told his chest wasn't too bad and to keep giving him the salbutamol of course, and that he was very phlegmy. His chest has eased since getting rid of some of the phlegm (sorry tmi lol).

Is he on a preventer like becotide (sp?) cos they can cause the phlegm. Not sure whether asthma does or not. BUt also dairy can cause a lot, particularly noticable during colds and coughs.

my ds has asthma ,he only needs the prednisolone if the salbutamol isn't working or I'm having to use it more than 4 hrly. This is regardless of plegm or not.
If his salbutamol isn't improving his wheezing I would give the prednisolone. It takes a while to work so it's worth giving it well before bedtime.

just reread the question, sorry.I don't think the prednisolone will do anything for the phlegm .If he's not wheezy I wouldn't give it.

thanks for the advice. just had my ear to his chest (mad mummy alert) and i can't hear any wheezing, just sounds like he has had 40 fags when he coughs!
am i right to assume that prednisolone can be given at any time i.e it doesn't have to be at the same time as antibiotics?
so, if say, next week he becomes wheezy again i can give him it without seeing the doctor again???
