Anyone on Mefenamic tablets for heavy/painful periods?

They are the only thing that work for me but do you experience 'total flooding'?

TMI but I have to rush to the loo as I have flooded through a tampon and a towel within a minute.

Before my GP prescribed them I was literally curled up in a ball for a day in total agony with vomiting and fainting so I am grateful but.............bloody hell! Literally.

Ask about Tranexamic Acid tablets (think that's the correct spelling). Before I went on the pill, I often had this problem and they worked wonders :)

Mefanemic acid is only but a short term measure and importantly does NOT address the CAUSE of the issues.

Having read your symptoms, endometriosis cannot be ruled out here. This can certainly cause heavy bleeding as well as very painful periods.

I would insist to your GP that you are referred to a gynae for further evaluation and a proper diagnosis. You should not have to put up with this!. You will need to be persistant in order to get answers.

Took these about 20 years for pain (pre pregnancies...did not have the pain problem after having babies) and they were excellent....did not have the flooding you talk about ..suspect there is another cause for that with you?
Hope you find out what might be triggering that...would be hard to live with, I am sure.

Pukkapik · 07/11/2013 14:56

Sorry...I meant i had them about 20 years AGO for pain!

TheSinisterTrifle · 07/11/2013 22:06

Thanks for your answers. Yesterday shocked even me. I was standing up at work and literally had to run to the loo as my tampon was flooded and I had two extra large sanitary towels but that was not enough. I had blood clots the size of cherries pouring out of me into the loo. All in the space of two minutes.

Could it be endrometriosis? Or is the Mefananic doing it's job?

I have just started on them for heavy bleeding. Only used them once and the bleeding was much reduced: to "normal for me" from "stupidly heavy with huge clots". (normal for me being before I went on aspirin as anticoagulant which made bleeding much heavier, unsurprisingly)

Only one month's experience but what you describe isn't how mine was on mefanamic acid. Fortunately.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 08/11/2013 10:49

It does not sound like the mefenemic acid tabs are making much, if any, difference whatsoever.

You need a gynae referral urgently and as a matter of course. GP should no longer be messing around in ignorance. In the meantime keep a daily diary of all symptoms shown.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 08/11/2013 10:49

Endometriosis and or fibroids cannot be ruled out here. In view of the pains you've had I would think endometriosis is more likely.

ExcuseTypos · 08/11/2013 15:23

I too think you should ask for a gyne referal.

On a side note, I took the same tablets for very heavy periods, but they really didn't make much difference. I was then put on Tranexamic acid and they did a much better job. Blood loss is about half what it was.

shootingstar1234 · 08/11/2013 21:35

Seriously, the Mefenamic tablets are mainly used for pain rather than the bleeding. It's Tranexamic that will reduce your flow. I have PCOS and regularly had the same problem as you until taking Tranexamic then eventually going on the pill, which really was life changing!

Firsttimer7259 · 09/11/2013 19:01

Same here - fibroids cause heavy periods - combo of mefemnamic and tranexemic sorted pain and flow. I now have mirena - bliss!

TheSinisterTrifle · 09/11/2013 20:33

I have looked into the Mirena but I have a history of abnormal smears and my GP said I would need it taken out whenever I have a colposcopy.

I think I will go back to my GP. The other day was really horrible and if I hadn't been within a minute of a loo I would have soaked through my jeans.

I have been on-off Mefenamic acid for about 20 yrs, never seems to have caused flooding (actually my periods are very light). I think you must investigate the real cause. Mefanamic acid is analgesic as well as a NSAID (anti-inflammatory) which works partly I think by dilating blood vessels very slightly but not enough to cause a flood unless there is something spectacularly unusual about OP's biochemistry.

crazykat · 09/11/2013 20:51

I was given these for heavy painful periods. They were to help with the pain (did bugger all) and I was given tranexamic acid for the bleeding. Tranexamic acid worked wonders but the pop pill micronor is better. I used to need tranexamic acid for the first five days but now only the first two.
