Sore to sit ....

Have had to change my name for this cos it's too ridiculous for words!

The last few weeks, I've had the sorest butt ... it feels muscular, it's agony to sit, even sorer when I stand up (I look like an old lady inching off a chair) and I have no real idea why. The muscles feel sore and, here's a clue I think, but it eases a bit with a few days away from work. Work involves me standing, pretty much in one position, for around 5 hours per day. Any ideas - is the standing the cause? Not something to discuss in RL as the teasing would be merciless but maybe MN'ers can come up with something?

you've probably just pulled a muscle it'll take longer to heal unless you just rest totally (maybe)

SoupDragon · 07/07/2006 20:22

Have you worked there long? It does sound like you strained something. Try a heat pad? Which isn't an attractive prospe if the weather's hot.

Firecracker · 07/07/2006 20:45

Been working there for quite a while but job circumstances changed in April and now having to stand for most of the day whereas before would've been up and down with more chance of sitting. Am going to try a hot bath now to see if it helps at all.

I wouldnt' have thought it would start hurting after this long though. Could it be anything else? An injury that standing is now aggravating?

southeastastra · 07/07/2006 20:47

my back kills me all the time have you got any deep heat that's good!

SoupDragon · 07/07/2006 20:47

Maybe Deep Heat rub if it feels muscular.

SoupDragon · 07/07/2006 20:47

I'd rethink your shoe choices? Also, standing perfectly still is quite hard on your back and muscles. Can you raise one foot a bit (on a step or something)? Or change position from time to time?

Also, iboprofen is good. Or go see a physio? You can see them on the NHS, often.

Shoes ... have tried flats & heels, shoes, flipflops and boots. The more I think about it, I think it's since started since the relentless standing started a couple of months back but it's just become unbearable in the last couple of weeks - esp the past two days. I've about 10 days off now so am hoping that I'll be able to get it settled. Am not so sure that I'd feel comfortable with the Deep Heat .... positioning

have you seen a dr, it may be a trapped nerve

Firecracker · 07/07/2006 20:59

Nope - I'd be mortified ... it just sounds so pathetic!!

What about sciatica or as described lower down on that page "Piraformis Syndrome" or "Pseudo-Sciatica - Gluteus minimus"?

SoupDragon · 07/07/2006 21:06

If standing for 5 hours a day is causing you pain then work should provide you with a stool/chair to sit on.

You might like to call it "lower back pain" rather than a painful ar$e though.
