No periods- should I be worried?

ds3 is 19 months old. I stopped breastfeeding about 6 months ago, although tbh at that stage he wasn't having that much anyway. My periods haven't started again should I go to the dr about this?

I'm 36 otherwise healthy although borderline underactive thyroid for about 4 years. I am not pregnant :)

Is your underactive thyroid gland currently being treated?. This could well be the reason for lack of periods.

Yes go to your GP. I didn't get periods for a year and was diagnosed with a prolactinoma and under active thyroid. Are you still producing breast milk? My periods returned when I started medication.

Thanks for the replies. No medication at the moment. Have to go to the dr next month for smear and the pill will ask then. Not sure about producing any milk.

I don't feel overtired at the moment. Hair is falling out a lot, have put on weight again and I am feeling the cold at the moment. We shall see!

I would definitely go to the GP and ask for a blood test. Get your prolactin levels, thyroid function and vitamin D checked. It may not be these, but your symptoms sound similar to mine.

I didn't loose any baby weight until I was put on meds. Also, if it is your thyroid get a referral to an endocrinologist especially if you're planning on anymore DC as it can effect pregnancy.

The other thing was, my consultant didn't want me on any contraception (like the pill) before I was sorted. Or else you won't know if your periods really have returned, if that makes sense, so I'm not sure I would go on the pill until you've got to the cause of it all as you need to know your periods have returned naturally first.

It might be possible that you are perimenopausal. I'm 38 and started around 35/36 years. Could explain why you haven't had a period in a long time. You need to go to doctor and ask for hormone bloodwork. Menopause under 40 is uncommon but not unheard of as i well know!

You said that you're going to the GP for a smear and the pill. You should discuss your lack of periods before asking for the pill and having your smear as some pills will affect any hormonal blood profiling they may need to do and most GPs would want to examine you and know why you're not having periods before starting you on hormonal contraception. Book an appointment that's more than 10mins long if you're having your smear and a consultation at the same. I hope it goes well.
