I have to go on my own as DH working (I only got the letter with appt yesterday! Grr) will I be ok to drive myself home, as the letter says I will have local anaesthetic.
I had a hysterectomy 3 months ago and still don't have the feeling that tells me I need to wee, now have a sexy indwelling catheter and bag (are you jealous yet?)
I am a bit nervous about today because these tests sound grim but I think they cut a nerve during my op which is why I can't feel when my bladder is full.
Any tips/advice about today?

You will be fine to drive home. The local anaesthetic will probably be a gel rather than a needle. (Same as is often used for an indwelling cath). Basically they will fill up your bladder and empty it again, perhaps a few times. It may get uncomfortable when your bladder is full or if you have detrusor spasms. It can be a bit dull if your bladder is large and you have to wait some time for it to fill up! It's usually a v relaxed atmosphere. Hope it goes well!

Thank you Yom! Do you think they will put my indwelling cath back in after? They are being very cagey about things and keep telling me it's very normal not to have any wee sensation 3 months post hyst (even though I am the only one on the hyst forum I go on that has this prob)
I know my surgery was 'bloody' because every consultant I speak to says this but doesn't elaborate.
Fed up!

If they take it out for the urodynamics they will put it back in (it will have to come out, I mean I'm assuming you don't do it yourself) I don't think it's normal to have no sensation but I do know it happens and can take a while to recover from nerve damage, or to learn a new way of controlling previous functions. Let us know how it goes!

Hi well it wasn't painful really but was very depressing.
They have cut through some nerves which is why I can't feel anything.
She filled my bladder (glamorous!) with 500ml of water and I could't feel a thing, that was on top of the 300ml I already had in there.
I have another indwelling cath and I have to wait for a consultant appt in 2 weeks.
Basically I just have to wait it can take 6 months to 2 years for the nerves to mend Sad
It's shit this. No sex life at all even ifIfeltlikeit with a piece of rubber hanging out of my bits.
I'm 41 FFS

Hi. Not sure if it would be suitable or has been mentioned but there is intermittent catheterisation. Where you pass a small catheter a few times a day yourself. Empty your bladder and remove the catheter. So no permanent catheter in place. Maybe worth a mention at your consultant appointment. Good luck

Backinthering · 08/11/2013 11:43

Yes please ask them about intermittent catheterisation. Less infection risk than indwelling.

SirRaymondClench · 08/11/2013 12:37

Scoob I tried that first :( I couldn't do it and every time I tried blood came out (sorry if TMI) Sad
I have to say life with an indwelling cath is utter crap!

IC is worth persevering with, might it be worth trying again now some time has passed and you're hopefully more healed? There are so many different types of catheter, it may just be a case of finding the one that suits you.

scoobdoob · 08/11/2013 21:07

Yes yom is definitely right. There are many, many catheters out there. Ask to be referred to your local continence advisor.
It takes time and patience and a good teacher.
Hopefully it wouldn't be for long until the nerve damage heals or at least improves.

Do you have any sensation in your bladder at all? Were you able to pass any urine yourself? There are lots of things that can help.
