Yuk - HEAD LICE & EGGS - how can I get rid of them?

Both my boys seem to have head lice They have not got many big ones but they seem to have lots of baby ones/eggs which have stuck to the hair shafts. I have tried Nice'n'Clear with the nit comb but it has only got rid of the 3 or so big lice. The baby ones/eggs go straight through the comb. What have you tried and what has been successful?
PS Will be popping back later to check this thread as need to go and eat now!

Hedrin works, it really does, yes its expensive but its worth it! Hallelujah.

But - how to get rid of the old eggs that are still stuck to my hair behind my ears and at nape of neck? On another thread I saw something about rinsing the hair with vinegar! Does anyone know the proportions vinegar to water - and does it really work? Reluctant to smell like a chip shop but desperate to go to the hairdressers and have my hair cut so I've got to get rid of these eggs. There's too many to slide out with my finger nails (and every time I've tried to, I've only managed to pull out the whole hair and I'm not ready to go bald yet). Any advice gratefully received

Well I put conditioner on dd's hair, used the nit comb which glides through, then washed the conditioner out. Still have to pull quite a few out with my fingers so the nit comb doesn't get them all.

Don't think I have them but treated myself just in case. When I tried using the nit comb on my own hair, it came out in clumps.

Wonder if they just break and fall off with time?

buy hedrin.

Hooray - received the nitty gritty comb this evening. It didn't get all the eggs off the hair but a lot more than other nit combs. Off to the shops to buy hedrin next.

What spray does anyone use for prevention? Has it worked and does it make your kids' hair oily?

Oh great my favourite subject!
did you know that each female headlouse can lay up to 1500 eggs in its lifespan of four weeks yippee!
They are crafty little buggers and hide very well even to the trained eye they seem to have camoflage, the sandy look on wet blonde hair is a dead give away and these are full eggs.on dark hair they are harder to see, behind the ears and the nape of the neck are favourite spots but so too is the crown just watch out for the itching and treat straight away because if you catch early before it does too much damage then its easy.
don't worry about the white egg sacs(nits)they are empty and just look unsightly its the brown ones near the scalp you need to remove.
Me personally i use the comb method with a jug of hot(not boiling) water and two drops of each tea tree and lavender oil and keep dipping and combing until the hair is really wet, if lice are present you will see them floating in the water, you don't need to rinse off if you don't want to as it also works as a deterrent.the more you comb the more damage you will do to the lice which in turn will kill them. remember the old saying about brushing your hair 100 times a day it was very effective for killing headlice.
hope this helps.
p.s yes i heard something about bristol or langford doing tests and on the bbc news site it says wales and london are doing tests have a look at\link{http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/1527566.stm}its got a close up of a louse.

I once did an experiment. Caught a louse off a head- someone in my family- put it in a match box to see how long it could live. A week later it was still goIng strong I'm afraid!!!!
