for a good few months my dh has started choking when eating. i had said if it carried on he needed to see a gp. it almost became a running joke....he would be eating one minute, and choke on the food the next.
tonight he couldnt get his food down. he choked. then he said it felt like something was stuck. then he was sick. twice.

being sick seemed to remove the blockage. he says he is fine. i have made him a doctors appointment for tomorrow, i am worried sick.

can anyone please talk to me about what this means.

he has had no other symptoms at all. no symptoms of GERD or anything else.

tonight has worried me - he could not swallow his food.

No medical expert at all but could it be linked to anxiety? I only ask that because a friend of mine suffered with anxiety and she used to have a real (physical) problem swallowing sometimes - like she had some blockage. Just an idea, hope you get it sorted x

My Mum used to get this, and for months, years almost we would laugh at her, and tell her to chew properly etc etc. She once even had to have the Heimlich manoeuvre done in a restaurant....

Turns out she had a pharyngeal pouch which is what is says, a little pocket that forms in your throat and some food can get trapped in there and affect your breathing and make you feel as if you have something stuck (well, because effectively you have)

The doc said it needed an op to sew it up and she had it done about 5 yrs ago. She is still wussy bless her about eating hard food (tough meat for example) but she never chokes now.

Might your dh have that I wonder? It does sound like it.

Hope that you get some answers soon.

its certainly not anxiety - he is the most laid back, un anxious person i have ever known. nothing ever worries him.

it has to be something physical im sure.

This could be lots of things and really, truly there is no point speculating.
I would love to be more helpful, but don't think that conjecture is helpful.

He's got an appointment with his dr which is what he needs. His GP is quite likely to refer him for an endoscopy which is the only way to reliably assess what's going on with his swallowing.

Step away from Dr Google (if that is where you are Wink) and get him assessed as planned.

V best of luck for tomorrow.
