Blood when pooing.

Would you go to the doc after one incidence of a small amount of bright red blood after passing a larger than usual poo? I don't have piles BTW. I am inclined to leave alone unless it recurs as I think it is probably a little scratch or fissure WWYD?

I would yes. If you had piles then I'd probably say no because it's obvious where the blood has come from. But as you don't yes. A quick check can rule out all kinds of things and reassure you. Blood in poo or wee ahold be investigated.

Ahardyfool · 30/10/2013 09:51

I'd leave it - it is bright red. You had a strainy kind of poo. No other symptoms?

I would be the sort of person that'd want to get this checked, but with my realistic head on, I would see if it happened again before visiting the GP.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 30/10/2013 17:26

Yes I would, after all no-one has died of embarrassment. Do not leave it. British people to my mind need to be far more open to their GPs about such problems with bowels. It is after all a natural bodily function and all parts of the body can and do go wrong.

It needs to be investigated further. Its likely not serious but you do not know why this has actually happened.

My DW had blood in the stools. She ignored it. 2 months later, she collapsed, nearly died and spent 2 months in hospital. Don't mean to scare you, as there are many reasons to have blood in the stools, but you don't know what the problem is until you go to the GP!

GreenShadow · 30/10/2013 17:34

No. You said it yourself - a larger than usual stool = a tear

gamerchick · 30/10/2013 17:37

No not for bright red.

MrPricklepants · 30/10/2013 18:16

Out of curiousity what has 'bright red blood' got to do with anything. Blood is blood. Tumours (sorry OP don't mean to worry you) from rectal, anal and/or bowel cancers can cause blood (of varying shades of red-to-brown) in poo and when pooing, likewise piles, tears from straining etc... But either way blood when pooing is not normal and is worth an investigation, and reassurance.

wigglybeezer · 30/10/2013 18:17

I think it is a tear as it stung in the shower this afternoon when exposed to shampoo run - off. I will monitor closely though, a bit reluctant to go the docs, not through embarrassment ( well past that after three kids) but because I seem to have had a run of referrals for the kind of thing you feel obliged to have checked, ie. a persistent cough, floaters in the eye, funny mole etc. various things with the children; all have turned out to be nothing at all, makes me feel like a hypochondriac!

Bright red blood is brand new and usually from a tear in the entrance.

As it sounds like a little tear there's nothing in there to go to a doctor as they heal on their own.

MrPricklepants · 30/10/2013 18:25

:) keep a close watch on it OP. It's likely to be nothing.

Seaoftroubles · 31/10/2013 11:24

The doctor usually asks if it is bright red as this is often indicative of piles..you say you don't have them but you may have internal ones.. very common and nothing to worry about.Go and see your G.P just to put your mind at rest.
