Gynae appointment for 5cm fibroid

I am seeing the gynaecologist on Thursday this week and wondered if any of you had experience of what I should expect.
I am 48 and have two fibroids, one is 5cm. I went to the dr as I am having a period every three weeks which is extremely heavy. I don't want any more children and would be happy for them to whip it all out but am not sure if that is an option. I am hypothyroid taking 125 mg of thyroxine per day and am on cymbalta for anxiety so don't know if this will affect the drugs option for shrinking them.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

I've just had an endometrial ablation due to heavy periods and fibroids. This procedure just removes the lining of the womb. I think your treatment will depend on where in your womb the fibroids are. I was told mine would be treated if they were making it misshapen but as it turns out, they are within the muscle, and so they were left alone. If they were pushing the womb they would have been taken out iyswim.

They might offer you a mirena as a first port of call for treatment though.

Thanks for the reply SpottyDottie, I suppose I am worried they will just say there is nothing they can do, the heavy periods are a nightmare especially when at work and my stomach looks bloated. I have been told they reduce in size after the menopause but I am not sure when that will happen and cant ask Mum as she is very confused.
Thanks again.

There is something they can do - don't be fobbed off! If surgery is not recommended for yous, there are drugs you can take to lessen the heavy periods, or the mirena as Dottie says.

I am post-meno now and it's true my fibroids did get smaller. When I had periods was on tranexamic acid for the last few years to stop them being too heavy.

There WILL be something they can do. Flowers

My consultant was very thorough and there were lots of options for me to think about.

Fibroids can reduce in size, that is true, but they can also stay the same or get bigger. bastards Grin

Seriously though, something will be done to help you.

Thank you ladies for your replies. I am always as weak willed with Drs as I am with hairdressers (some truly hideous creations greeted with a 'thank you it's lovely). I would prefer to get it removed rather than anything else but will listen to the options and see what happens.
