Has anyone ever conquered a phobia? How?

I have dental phobia and need sedation if I have treatment. I want to get over this as I have needed lots of treatment recently and don't feel I should be sedated every time. It can't be healthy can it? I need a filling replacing and as I have just had a general anaesthetic I can't be sedated for some time yet. So I'm beating myself up about it. why can't I just walk in, get it done, go home?? My dentist is brilliant btw. Its not them, its definitely me!!

If you've had a phobia, how did you beat it?

Hypnotherapy!

SpottyDottie · 26/10/2013 16:19

I'd love to try that but the hypnotherapist I've rung have specialised in stopping smoking or losing weight or self esteem. OR they have no spaces!!! It's very frustrating Sad

Look for the rewind technique. Google it in your area.

cupcake78 · 26/10/2013 16:21

Do you live in the sticks or in a populated area?

SpottyDottie · 26/10/2013 16:25

I actually know what caused this. It wasn't even the dentist. I haven't heard of the rewind technique. I live in the sticks

Yes. I had to have a tooth extracted. I had it done. And I realised if that was the worst thing, it wasn't so bad
Mainly - children's numbing gel before injections, wearing an iPod to block noise out. Having a hand signal and a dentist that knew stop meant stop now
I can go now and have checkups and hygienist treatment with no panic and no iPod Grin

I have a dental phobia too and get sedated for big stuff (root canal), but not for fillings etc. I think it's getting easier, I'd suggest easing yourself in gently. If I need a filling I use Diazepam instead of being sedated. I think the main issue is one of control tbh - you need to feel that they will stop if you ask them to. My issue seems to be with tastes that make me gag. When they sedate me the Midazolam prevents the gagging (and gets me high) so I don't care what they do. I haven't got over my phobia but I feel it's more manageable now, and that I'm making very slow progress (which is better than no progress)...

I'm better than I was a few years ago but feel like I'm at an impasse. I have a small filling that needs doing. When I'm at home, I am pretty good at positive thinking and bolstering myself up to go. Once there and in the chair, all that goes.i cry, im a wreck, I gag. I want to conquer it!

I post, and then think of something else to add Grin

I've ordered a couple of self help books from amazon but a lovely mnetter has suggested rewind therapy and given me a link to local practitioners. Has anyone else heard of rewind therapy? I must admit I hadn't.
