urgent referral to breast clinic

Found a small lump in right breast a week ago.
Had an appointment to see the nurse for a pill check anyway so asked her to give me an examination.
She then told me to make a gp appointment as she could feel the lump.
Saw my gp this morning and she felt t and said would refer me as is standard procedure and should be seen within 2 weeks, but not to worry.
This afternoon, recieved a phonecall from the hospital who have had an urgent referral from gp. Am in next week to see consultant. The lady on the phone said i wouldnt be staying in at this stage and to bring any holiday/days out dates with me and the consultant would try and work future appointments around them.
Can anyone tell me if this is nornal procedure or did they have to wait longer?
I am now worried the gp knows something and didnt tell me. Although logically i know she cant without further investigation.

Things like breast lumps, blood in your stools, blood in urine which could potentially be cancer are referred and seen under the "2 week rule" so it is completely normal to be seen very quickly, often have quite a lot of tests and then you can be started on treatment of needed.

This is great if you do have cancer, but it means a lot of people are seen who don't, and thus can be very stressful and frightening.

I would suggest you assume it will all be fine, but be glad that you will be seen and treated as soon as possible if it does turn out to be something worrying (depending on your age most breast lumps are benign)

Thankyou for answering.
I am trying not to think about it too much and know how good it is to be seen so quickly.

Just typed out a long reply, but it comes down to what antidote has said - this is entirely standard procedure for everyone. You are not being rushed through a special fast lane.

It's very scary but please try not to worry too much Flowers

There's a thread (I think it's called the Tamoxifen thread) where the regular posters will, I'm sure, be able to hold your hand and tell you what to expect. I'll have alook for it.

Mama1980 · 25/10/2013 16:57

It sounds like standard procedure. I had a lump and was seen 3 days later - it was scary but at the appointment the consultant said it was normal to be seen so fast they like to move quickly to be safe.
I ended up having a ultrasound, followed by a biopsy that same day as the ultrasound established a lump. Turned out to be totally benign and just a cyst. In reality the speed was a blessing as within 10 days I knew it was nothing to worry about.
Fingers crossed that is the case with you too.

popsocks · 25/10/2013 17:23

Thankyou all, i will have a look at that thread.
I was worrying i was being fast tracked because they knew something so it is reassuring to hear that its just normal. Smile

Popsocks all breast lumps are fest tracked, which is a very good thing in my experience. As I understand it, 9/10 breast lumps are benign, most turn out to be harmless cysts. It is really important that you go and get it checked out though. The worrying about what it could potentially be is awful, trust me, I know only too well.

You should expect to have a mammogram and and ultrasound scan which will give the consultant enough info to decide if your lump is a cyst, or something that requires more investigation. If the latter, then you can expect to have a biopsy taken (which is a bit ouch, but mercifully quick).

Do feel free to pop over to the Tamoxifen thread - they are a super-friendly bunch full of experience, knowledge and most of all, hand-holding.

handbagsatdawn · 25/10/2013 17:45

Argh fast tracked!!!!!

CuntyBunty · 25/10/2013 19:40

I think they do "urgent" for most breast lumps. I have lumpy tits and a massive family history of breast cancer.

I was recalled for a mammogram this week after they saw some dots on the one done routinely two weeks ago. They have to have a meeting about what they found: it could be they all agree that it's nothing and off I go, or it could be that I need a biopsy.

It is what it is, until I hear bad news. It crosses my mind in an idle sort of way, like, "oh yes, I am going to get a phone call off the consultant soon".

Anyway, just want to say hi and that I am having a similar thing. Hope you are ok. I'm up for a chat on this thread whenever.

BackforGood · 25/10/2013 19:54

Very normal. I saw GP on Sat morning. At 10am on the Monday I had a phone call asking if I could come in on the Wednesday.
The NHS is just FAB Smile

The ladies on the Tamoxifen thread (in General Health) will be able to give you all the hand holding you need, but will also tell you that something like 9/10 lumps aren't cancer, and 9/10 of those that are are easily treatable.

HTH

As all they others are saying fast is normal. Anticipate ultrasound, mammogram and fine needle aspirate of lump all on the same day.

The vast majority of people get reassurance on the same day. All of the staff are amazing they deal with very scared people every single day.
I had a longer road to get an all clear, but the actions of the staff on the day I did tell you everything you need to know. My breast cancer care nurse broke into a broad smile as the consultant gave me the news and said ' that's fantastic I'm so pleased for you'. I am a single mum so she had held my hand physically and mentally on more times than I care to remember.
You will be in excellent hands.

Thankyou everyone x

Popsocks the speed of referral is all very normal .
And as said further up thread , 9 out if 10 lumps are nothing sinister .
That said , it's not going to stop you panicking !
Come on over to Tamoxifen , we can walk you through all the procedures and hold your hand x
