Runny poo at 20 months!

Is this normal? My 20 month son still has runny poo 90% of the time. I stopped BF recently and thought that might make a difference but didn't. I was thinking maybe he has an intolerance to milk - tried him on soy milk to which his response was yuck! Any suggestions/advice?

I think this is toddler diarrhoa. Both mine had/have this, and it's normal imo. (I know DS2's is worse when he has a high fibre diet, but he loves fruit and nuts, so he often has a lot of fibre.)

Actually his diet is very heavy on fruits, he can't get enough of them! So maybe that is more the cause. Thanks for the tip.

My ds (3) also has had runny poos for most of his life. my dd(8mo) has never had one since being on solids. I too wonder if something is up with him, some sort of intolerance, but he too eats lots of fibre. Maybe that's just it. May mention it at the docs next time we go. Would be interesting to hear what others have to say.

They do seem to firm up. My DS1 had runny poos too, but now, at nearly 5, he produces something more normal-looking, about half the time.

I expect the same to happen with DS2.

Runny poos can be a sign of an intolerance, though, of course. A friend's DS was making loads of horrible runny poos every day, thanks to bananas.

My ds was also like this. Someone on MN asked if he had ever been on antibiotics, he had and thinking back I suppose that is when the runny poos started. I got him some pro-biotics from a health food shop and within days his poo was ok again!

We avoid too many high fibre foods as this sets him off, but he's generally ok now.

I agree with NQC, my ds1 had toddler diarrhea, also abit grainy (tmi), probably will grow out of it, but if you are worried get it checked out

madmarchhare · 05/07/2006 14:44

Same here with DS at 2.6. Switched to goats milk and it has made a slight difference. He also eat loads of fruit.

Ive never mentioned it to gp/hv as there doesnt seem to be any other problem, but might have to think about it now big boy pants are almost upon us.

Runny poos are less gross when they're toilet trained, there's less to clean up, iyswim. And they're not sitting in the runny poo, annoying their skin.

I should try giving probiotics a bit more, I gave some to DS2 when he had bad runny poo, and it did seem to help a bit. (He's never had anti-bs, come to think of it. And I haven't had any while bf him.)

I'm pretty sure the problem is fibre with him, anyway. He has a real mania for brazil nuts (!!), and also really likes to eat my muesli, which is homemade, and full of seeds. Both of these go right through him.

Thanks for all your replies I feel a lot more reassured now. Nice to know I am not the only one having all the fun!!

NQC - her ds had a banana intolerance? My ds eats a banana a day!! May google for that one!

NotQuiteCockney · 09/07/2006 20:16

Yeah, a friend's DS had a banana intolerance. Pretty rare I think. Foul and copious poos. Not just runny, but frequent, lots per day.

She dropped bananas and the problem went away.

DS2 has bizarrely produced a reasonably poo-like poo today. Along with some of the usual slurry. (He rarely poos more than twice per day.) He did binge on meat yesterday, which he normally avoids.
