Depends on what sort of holiday she's going on, what type of op she has etc. You have to have 12 weeks off work, no lifting, after a hysterectomy, so she couldn't carry suitcases or do anything strenuous. I had a gyne op last year, serious, but not a hysterectomy, and although I was Ok after 3 or 4 weeks I found I tired easily. I got lots of infections afterwards as well, so I wouldn't have been comfortable going - I was in and out of the GPs collecting Abs.

My friend has recently had this done & I think it depends whether they can do it keyhole, without opening you up. If they have to go in through the abdominal wall, then it will be the same recovery as a c-section - no driving for 6 weeks, no lifting, lots of rest. She had non invasive and was pretty much doing every thing as normal after 3 weeks - no matter how much we tried to get her to slow down. She has a busy personality IFKWIM and wouldn't let it interupt her, although in the first week I think she was surprised at how much simple tasks took out of her. Depends how much rest your sis can get in the weeks before the hols - and how much she will allow herself! My friend was bored stupid after one afternoon in bed reading. They kept her in for 3 nights after the op, so at least she was glued to the bed for that time! Hope all goes well. The silver cloud is no more periods. The down side is you can still get PMT!

She should discuss it with her consultant, but tbh flying off on holiday 3 weeks after a major operation sounds very unlikely to me.

Keep bumping it though, and hopefully you'll get someone who's actually had it done

trace2 · 04/07/2006 19:25

they say they are doing it through her vagina

she did tell her doc and he said it was ok, but she is worried so i thought i would ask on here

I've heard that the recovery time having it done like that is really good, nothing like having it done the other way. I think she should trust her Doctor then

nicnack2 · 04/07/2006 19:41

for any abdominal surgey lift and driving is restricted. even if the hysterectomy is keyhole or vaginal. i wont think she wold feel up to going on holiday. maybe she should discuss with her consultant for a date after holiday.

mummyhill · 04/07/2006 19:47

My nan had it done that way and it knocked her about but she was in her seventies at the time so your sister being younger may recover quicker.

Blandmum · 04/07/2006 19:52

depend on how they do it. Even leaving the overaies intact (which is a good thing as it stops a sudden menopause), and having it done vaginaly , it is still a major op. She would be well advised to talk to her docs to see what they think

AttilaTheMeerkat · 04/07/2006 21:11

This is not being done because of endometriosis is it?. If it is because of endo, I would advise sister to get a second opinion before going ahead.

I would at the very least talk to her consultant surgeon about the op and recovery time. Presumably they know about her forthcoming holiday?.

trace2 · 04/07/2006 21:38

no its because she as fibrobes which make her bleed most of the time, and she as thicking of the womb too
