Umbilical hernia and Inguinal hernia

Hi, my ds(3) needs to have an op to have these corrected. Does anyone have any experience of these? The consultant said that he'd be putting a stitch in to close the 'holes' in both his bellybutton and groin. Is there a particular technique that should be used? I have read somewhere that stitches can put the muscle under strain and that a 'mesh' should be used. But not sure if that's for adults where the hernia can be much more serious.

Would appreciate comments from anyone who has been through this with their kids. Thanks.

Ds had an Inguinal hernia when he was 6 weeks old (it was his due date & he weighed about 4 lb at the time).
I'm not sure how it was repaired I presume stitching the hole up but I was told that there should be no further problems with this.

I had a herniated belly button as a child and it was cut and stitched in. Dont know the ins and outs I am afraid just to say it has never caused me any problems even when pregnant apart from occasional aching when getting af but obviously your ds wont suffer that.

Thanks for the info. Would still love to hear from anyone else.

My 6 year old DD had an umbilical hernia repaired last week. It was done under general anaesthetic but as a day case so she was home the same night. They stitched it and she has a very neat semi-circle stitched bit where her "new" bellybutton will go in - apparently the small scar will hide in the crease of her inny bellybutton. I've been told to keep her off PE / swimming / any running etc for 4 weeks (good luck with a 3yo!!)

I was very worried, but it went very smoothly.

Good luck x

Thanks MamaG. Glad your dd is ok. Hmmm, yes, keeping a 3yo boy still will be very difficult !!

my ds had an umbilical hernia and a rectal sheath hernia repaired under general about 6 months ago, aged 4. it was done first thing in the morning and he was out in the evening. he was cut and stitched - no mesh. the scars are very small. he seemed to suffer no pain from the incisions (they inject painkillers during the op and then he took quite strong painkillers for a few days), but I and he found the anaesthetic unpleasant. i found it difficult as i went to the theatre with him and he was sat on my knee to be anaesthetised. he found the worst bit having the canula inserted.

i was supposed to keep him still and quiet for four weeks which i found nigh on impossible but it didn't seem to do him any harm. certainly within a fortnight i couldn't stop him running. certainly the whole thing was far less traumatic than i'd feared.

Thanks porolli.. glad your DS is ok and healed quickly. Kids seem to bounce back don't they.

My ds had a tongue-tie op just before he was 2 and I had to go in with him to have the GA administered. Thankfully he was only under for 15mins so didn't suffer the effects that much, but I know this op will be for longer. It's reassuring to hear about all of these experiences.
