I would really like to know how long any pain relief effects might last after a hysterectomy please. I know women can be walking fairly soon after but would there still be painkilling benefits in the abdomen for longer? I want to express concerns at being discharged 24 hours after a hysterectomy with nowt but paracetamol and ibuprofen but I want to get my facts right and not look an arse

Spinal blocks wear off after a few hours and a patient controlled morphine pump. I had them for both caesarians. I was up and walking about the day after. Pain relief I used was voltarol (diclofenac) suppositories then paracetamol and voltarol orally. Most people are ready to go home by 24-48 hours if no complications and getting home reduces infection risk and DVT risk. Most people are discharged fairly early these days.

Had a spinal block for a c section, and it didn't provide any pain relief for more than a few hours afterwards from what i can remember. Pretty much wears off straight away.

I had a spinal too for my c-section, mine took probaby the best part of 10-12 hours to wear off, but once it did the pain was up and walking the same day. Pain was bad though once it wore off. I had diclofenac too along with morphine.

Is the hysterectomy planned to be trans vaginal? If so should be much less painful post op than cs. I'm sure if you are in a lot of pain they will give you something stronger. Remember that being discharged doesn't mean you have recovered, rather that you will recover equally well or better at home. Hope you have some good books and a box set!

The hysterectomy is done and dusted thanks Mathilda Smile Thanks to everyone for your info. I just wanted to get the epidural/spinal thing straight in my mind.
