My hair is falling out... I'm quite scared

Okay. So for the last two weeks my hair has been falling out. loads of it, at this point it is probably half the thickness it was two weeks ago.

My baby is nine so not pregnancy related.

About 6 months ago I was losing loads of weight. Because of this I have had many many tests from full blood, including thyroid, chest xrays, scans, both the 'oscopies' . They found nothing. They are still looking for a cause but the weight loss had slowed down.

Do I just go back and start all the tests again.

I was so relieved when they didn't find anything. And now I am worried again.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Could it be severe stress?, a few years ago I had a stressful period in my life and I didn't feel able to express myself emotionally so it caught up with me physically with hair loss, once the stress had subsided this stopped and my hair grew back

No advice, but sympathy - am also having hair thinning/drying problems at the moment. And was investigated for weight loss a year ago (now fine).

One thought...hormones? May I ask how old you are?

AfricanExport · 21/10/2013 10:09

Hi. Thanks guys. I am 41. It could be stress. We are fucking broke... lol. Could that be it Envy

Also all the tests because of the weight lods were very stressful and hubby does not deal well with me being ill. He is very scared something happens to me so I tend to keep my worries to myself. Also alone in the UK so no family to share with. ..

Could be stress AND hormones!

You could ask the GP to check your hormone levels, but basically perimenopause does funny things to weight and hair (and skin and moods and god knows what else) Wink

Thank you. I had read it could be pre menopause stuff but mom only hit it at 60 so I thought not.

I will get it checked out but it's a relief to know that it could be both of those. They don't seem too sinister. .. and some of these wigs I see are stunning Grin

Do you have the copper coil?

JuliaScurr · 21/10/2013 12:12

lack of iron? take vit C too or you can't digest it

AfricanExport · 21/10/2013 13:00

Hi. I don't have a coil... I don't use any contraceptive Shock

I have got some multivitamins and am taking berrocca at the moment too. I will get iron tablets tonight. .

I experienced hair loss when I was on the coil. So, not that then.

Maybe vitamin d deficiency, b12 or early menopause? I am also losing hair and have been for the last 3 months, I have had tests which all seem normal, apart from low ferritin which was 16.

RaisingthedeadArizona · 21/10/2013 17:07

Definitely could be stress. Being broke is mega stressful. And it sounds like there's not much outlet for it if you don't have family over here and you are worried about stressing DH out by telling him.

I'm having major hair thinning/loss problems (for the last year really) and can really empathise. It's so upsetting and scary. Have you been told what the numbers of your iron/ferritin/thyroid levels were. Mine didn't tell me, just said everything was 'normal' so I didn't ask until I went back to my GP again last week to discuss the problem and she said my iron was 35 which according to my hairdresser is too low for optimal hair health and regrowth and it needs to be around 70 for that. So I'm getting re-tested and depending on the result this time, will ask GP if I can go on some prescription strength iron.

I would definitely ask your GP what your iron/ferritin level numbers are. Depending on what they show, could you ask for a referral to a specialist?
