HI Lisalisa, could you be pg?

willow2 · 03/07/2006 15:30

Do a pregnancy test - also, be aware that an ectopic pregnancy can cause this - did with me.

my first thought too lisalisa - even if you have never had spotting during a pregnancy before, it could well be that. You need to do a test to be sure.

Miaou · 03/07/2006 15:45

oops sorry crossed posts!!

madmarchhare · 03/07/2006 15:46

You havent had coil fitted have you? (Sorry if thats too obv)

FWIW, pregnancy tests came up negative with me to start with. Suppose wasn't making as much preggie hormone as was in the wrong place?

LeahE · 03/07/2006 17:08

I'd take another pg test just to be sure. Apart from that -- are you using any hormonal contraception?

Would get this checked out by your GP. Any bleeding between periods should be checked out medically to ascertain the underlying cause.

I had this as a side effect of PCOS but with 5 pregnancies thats unlikely to be a problem for you! You need to get it checked out - if the lining of your utereus is too thick then bits break away rather than having a proper period. Normally a D&C sorts it out - if its just hormonal Mirena coil is one treatment (thats what they recommended to me and it worked a treat), no boubt there are others.

my sister has PCOS and gets pregnant at the drop of a hat - well, not anymore, her husband got the snip a while back.

suejonez · 24/07/2006 22:39

very unusual to get pregnant so easily with PCOS - are you sure you have the syndrome and not just cysts on your ovaries? About 20% of women have cysts on their ovaries with no symptoms, a much smaller percentage have the syndrome with a variety of symptoms.

Anyway if you do have the syndrome then lack of periods will mean that you have a much higher than normal risk of cancer of the uterus prior to menopause so bleeding between periods MUST be investigated. If treatment for thyroid works then thats OK, if it doesn't, get your GP to refer you to a gynae, many (most) GP's are not aware that PCOS is a risk factor for endometrial cancer.

Risk is obviously still low compared to the much more likely hormonal explanation.

sorry to hijack a second, Suejones ive just had thickning of the womb diagnosed but was told it was an imbalance of hormones causing it, and was not given any treatment. Does that sound right? You seem to know quite a bit about the subject. I have made a follow up appointment as i was concerned about it as i may want to ttc in the near future. Sorry for the hijack!

suejonez · 25/07/2006 09:33

How have they diagnosed it? Did they just do an ultrasound? There is a guideline about how thick the lining of your womb should be - from memory I think it goes from 3mm-12mm depending on the stage of your cycle. Mine was at the upper limit just after a period when it should be at its thinnest, so although within limits, it was felt to be sufficiently abnormal to warrant investigation.

Mine was also felt to be hormone imbalance (due to PCOS) but as a short dose of the pill didn't stop the erratic bleeding, the gynae moved on to the scan and when that measured thick I had a D&C and biopsy which was thankfully clear.

At that point she advised me to have a mirena coil fitted to keep my endometrium thin.

I would think your best bet is to persuade your GP to refer you to a gynae and discuss your concerns with them.
