Hoarse Voice

Just wondering if anyone has had this. DF has had a hoarse voice for couple of months, he's 70. He's had endoscopy and colonoscopy for bleeding down below and having trouble swallowing/indigestion. Nothing was found except piles and abit of stomach erosion caused by taking daily aspirin. Anyway, sometimes voice is ok,other times really hoarse, Just wondering if its connected to stomach problems? I've told him to go back to GP, although consultant who did endoscopy was aware of his voice Confused Thanks for any advice

It can be a symptom of a number of things. Did they do a full blood work up on him before? For example one thing it could be a symptom of is low thyroid. He should mention it to the Doctor and see if they think it is related.

I was going to say thyroid.

Perhaps he has a touch of this

emummy · 19/10/2013 10:41

He should definitely return to GP. Thyroid problems are a good suggestion, it could also be a local problem. An endoscopy will not have looked at the pharynx and larynx; if it were my relative I would like an ENT referral to check these areas if hoarseness is persisting

I agree with emummy. I would push for an ENT referral, and have larynx etc checked.

Can be nothing, most likely is, but friend's dad just had persistent hoarseness and needed treatment - he's doing fine now, and has a very good prognosis, but if he'd left it things could have been different.

Thanks everyone, Smile he did have bloods taken so assume thyroid is ok, had a chest x ray too which was all clear, Elibean was it cancerous? That's what I'm secretly afraid of, he's going to GP next week so will hopefully get referred to ENT

Yes, it was - but as I said, very good success rates these days with surgery and/or radiotherapy. He had just radio (after a biopsy that showed it was a bit deep for surgery) and has a 95% odds of being fine now Smile

That's good news elibean Fingers crossed all is well with my DF, he's had enough health issues over the years so doesn't need more worries Sad
