I've found a lump...

Late last night I found a lump in my right breast. It's painful and I'm not sure what to do. Do I wait until Monday and hope I can get an emergency appointment or do I go straight to A&E today? I'm not pregnant or breast feeding so it can't be a blocked duct.

Any advice? Trying not to panic and I know the majority of lumps are benign... But...

Will I feel silly if I go to A&E? Will they tell me to bugger off?

Can you call OOH & see what they say? If you're in Wales might be worth calling NHS direct for advice. I wouldn't go to A&E tbh unless the above say to do so.

I hope everything turns out ok.

Thanks GinGin I'll try out of hours. We're quite rural so there's no walkin clinic, just a small hospital. Will give them a phone.

You don't need to go to OOH/A&E, but you do need to get on with a GP appointment on Monday or next week.

eggdipdip · 19/10/2013 09:38

Thanks CMOT. DH thinks OOH will just tell me to make an appointment on Monday. Just had a mini panic I think. It's not an emergency or an accident. Calm down egg ffs

Hi eggdipdip, I've just started my own thread in a similar position. How are you and what did you do? I don't think I'm going to sleep easily tonight.

Beamur · 19/10/2013 23:14

Contact your gp in the morning. Breast lumps get v fast treatment. Is your period due? I had a sore lump earlier this year that turned out to be harmless, but due to hormones. It went away by itself.

WorriedAtNight · 19/10/2013 23:27

Sorry hijacking a bit - never sure with my period as I've got PCOS. I'll go to walk-in surgery tmw as doc isn't open until Mon. Glad to hear yours was fine in the end.

Beamur · 19/10/2013 23:34

Don't worry unduly if they refer you to hospital. My gp was very non~committal about what mine could be but the hospital did a thorough examination, mammogram and an ultrasound before telling me they eere happy it was nothing of concern.

Audilover · 19/10/2013 23:42

I found a lump back in July. It was the week before my period. I waited until after my period and then made an appointment with my GP. I saw her on the Friday and she referred me to the local hospital straight away. On the Monday I had a phone call from the breast care unit at our local hospital to make an appointment. Normally where i live somebody with a lump in their breast is seen within 2 weeks, I was 3 weeks as we were going on holiday. At my appointment I had a mammogram and an ultrasound and it turned out that I have fibro cystic breast disease/ condition.

WorriedAtNight · 19/10/2013 23:48

Ok thanks Beamur. I did wonder how people cope with the time when you're being referred but don't know any likelihoods.

That sounds like a traumatic time, audi. Is the condition manageable? I hope you're ok.

Beamur · 19/10/2013 23:54

I won't say don't worry, i had a horrible few days, try and keep busy. Fingers crossed for you.

MellowMarshmallow · 19/10/2013 23:54

Hi Worried. I've had a few lumps investigated. So many not serious things it can be. A sticky out of duct, cyst or fibroid type lump. If its sore to touch it sounds more like a cyst but my lumps got sore just from me worrying about them. Get yourself to the GP as its best to get checked out. The odds are hugely in favour of it bring nothing.

WorriedAtNight · 19/10/2013 23:57

Thanks thanks mellow too. I do feel much better than I did when I logged in, just for the possibility that it's not cancer. It's been a terrible last two weeks and my children really need me. Mumsnet is such an amazing thing for this.

Audilover · 19/10/2013 23:59

WorriedAtNight yes it is manageable. I wear a support bra at all times, day and night. I take Evening Primrose Oil and I've cut caffeine from my diet. The worse time is the week before my period but i've learnt the hard way not to over do things and to check my breasts often to check things haven't changed
To begin with it was a bit of a shock but now I've got used to it I can manage it.
It was a worry when I found the lump but the GP I saw was brilliant and she actually thought that it was fibro cystic breast condition when I saw her.

WorriedAtNight · 20/10/2013 00:02

That's interesting audi. Good to bear in mind. Was yours warm/hot or red, if you don't mind my asking?

Audilover · 20/10/2013 00:09

WorriedAtNight i've PM'ed you.
The breast with the lump in was significantly larger than the other but I couldn't tell you if it was hotter than the other. It wasn't red though.

eggdipdip · 11/12/2013 12:58

Gosh, forgot I'd started this thread. Sorry for going AWOL.

I went to the GP about 2 weeks later in the end. She wasn't convinced it was anything to worry about and was happy to just leave it at that but I asked for a referral to the breast clinic. I just wasn't happy ignoring it.

I had my appointment at the breast clinic last week and the consultant was lovely. He reassured me that it's probably a 'fibroid type thing' (technical term obviously Grin) but he wants me to have a mammogram and ultrasound.

The appointment letter came in this morning. It suddenly feels serious. Or at least real. I know that sounds weird. I've been expecting to be dismissed as silly, but now the consultant is taking me serious I'm a bit nervous.

How are you getting on WorriedAtNight? I'm 37 btw.
