Vaginal discharge in a 5 year old

I am a little worried because DD has had some discharge for about a week now. She complains that her 'bottom feels wet' and she wants to change her knickers. Everything looks normal down there and she is not complaining of any pain or discomfort. Is this normal for little girls? Should I take her to the doctor? Any ideas? Thanks

My dd had this. TBH I assumed it was normal and didn't worry. Isn't it just part of the vagina self cleaning. Mucus (if thats' what it is) comes through the membrane, as with the nose and mouth. This is what I told my dd anyway.

I think if it smells unpleasant or yeasty then I would worry and think about the possibility of thrush - especially in this weather, but otherwise I reckon it's normal.

Though I'm no expert.

Yes take her to the doctors it might be thrush or another infection she has picked up, it is not normal but nothing to be alarmed about either I expect.

Now what do you do? two opposite answers !

MrsMom · 03/07/2006 13:36

I will wait for 1 more answer and see which side that one comes down on!

This any help?

I would take her to the doctor, the worst thing that could happen is that they tell you is normal but at least she has a chance to be checked, and if she has an infection they can stop it before it gets more problematic.

If the discharge is clear or white, and if it doesn't smell, then I reckon it's normal. If it's a darker colour or if it smells, then she needs to see the GP. Dd suffers with thrush and vaginal infections, and there's always a change in colour and smell when they crop up.

hi, i started having discharge at the age of 5. at the age of 7 it was still going my mum took me to the wet the bed clinic as the doctors didn't know what to do.
At the clinic they said it was normal i was to wear pantyliners and my period wold start within a matter of years. I was 9 when my period came.
If she is uncomfortable please give her some pantyliners, it is horrible being wet and sticky.
If there is no smell and no weird colour to the dischange and is not ichy i wouldn't worry.

Thanks for all this advice. I can't bear to think that my 5 year old could be having hormonal stimulation. (That article was very interesting Furball.)She still seems like a baby to me! I will leave it a few more days and then take her to the doctor.

Thanks furball for the link.
It's good to see my instinct was correct.
