Child with painful urination on and off since last Dec. NOT uti.

I've posted about this before but it's been a while.

DD2 is 3 and a half and has been suffering with painful urination on and off since last December. Urine cultures show white blood cells and sometimes a few red bloods cells, but NO bacteria (apart from on one occasion several months ago when bacteria was confirmed).

She has no symptoms of infection, her only problem is that it sometimes hurts to wee. She also has red/sore vulva sometimes but this doesn't always coincide with the painful wees.

We initially went down the AB route presuming the pain was an infection. We were then finally referred to a paed at the hospital. She felt that it was most likely to be vulvovaginitis and told us not to let the GP prescribe any more ABs unless infection is proven.

We followed this advice and have discovered that, if left, the pain will resolve without treatment, but she continues to have raised white blood cell levels in her urine, even when she is totally well.

She's had a kidney scan which was normal and nothing else wrong with her.

I'm just going round in circles trying to work out what's causing this intermittent pain and the white blood cells in her urine.

Sorry this is a bit garbled. It seems like a long story! I've tried to research it myself but it gets tricky and most information is about UTIs.

Does anyone have any advice?

coul.d it be thrush? or would that have shown up alreadt?

I don't think so Bundaberg, but it has crossed my mind too. She's not itchy although does sometimes have a slight discharge.

i wonder if it would be worth treating as that anyway? at the very least it would rule it out if it made no difference

Hmm, I've tried applying thrush cream on the odd occasion before but didn't seem to make any difference. The redness tends to be eased by barrier creams like zinc and castor oil. It's truly a mystery, to me at least!
