London endocrinologist recommendations please

I have vey high thyroid antibodies but normal hormone levels. GP thinks it's fine and wouldn't refer me to a specialist because "what would a specialist do?" Hmm Also said that going to see one privately would be "a waste of money". I made an appointment to see him again tomorrow and am determined to get a referral - NHS or private. Would anyone recommend a good endocrinologist in London? Thanks in advance!

Hi do you know your numbers of the antibodies and tsh? if you don't mind me asking, also are you having any symptoms.

I was diagnosed with a possible infection of the Thyroid with a TRH blood test. That is to check how the Pituary and Thyroid are working together. It involves 1 drawing of blood, then an injection of TRH, then after 30 minutes another blood test to see the reaction. Mine was abnormal and was treated with cortisone for 6 weeks to get rid of the infection. My TSH was normal btw.

I am monitored for anti thyroid antibodies, my consult told me that the antibodies appear 18 months to 2 years before hypothyroidism develops. So when I develop the antibodies then they will switch to monitoring T4, TSH and Free T4.

My consultant told me that the antibodies are of little value, he said that it just tells them that the patient has had a thyroid problem or is at a higher risk to develop a thyroid condition in the future. This was a private endocronoligist at the spire health centre.

He sais that just because you have antibodies it doesn't mean you will definitely get a thyroid problem, or that you have hashimotos, you just don't know who to believe. I paid privately to get some answers. The thing is I don't have any symptoms of a thyroid problem, apart from hair loss which the Dr put down to low ferritin level.

Prettyandddainty that's exactly what is getting to me - that noone will speak to you like a normal person and explain things. Basically, I went to see a gynecologist who spotted that there might be a thyroid problem. I had in ultrasound which showed that it was larger than normal and had to do blood tests. Results were anti-tpo of 700, ThAb 500, TSH 1.5. The gynecologist said that I need to see an endocrinologist to get treatment. Otherwise I will develop hypothyroidism. I have several symptoms - most notably anxiety attacks, rage, thermoregulation issues (i sometimes start sweating for no good reason - even thought I was starting menopause).

Valerie I am not getting any symptoms apart from hair loss, and Dr's are putting that down to low ferritin, other than that I am fine, no thyroid symptoms. My sister has an overactive thyroid which she takes medication for, she also had a blood test done recently, she also had high antibodies in her blood test, and she is on medication for her hyperthyroidism, so what does that mean?

prettyanddainty · 16/10/2013 14:54

Valerie are you getting any symptoms then?

pickofthepops · 17/10/2013 22:24

I have just seen this so realise it's probably late, sorry. Gerard Conway. Seen him for two rounds of appointments. Thorough and v approachable and listens.

valeria

the symptoms you listed suggest a over active thyroid condition.

I was diagnosed by a nhs endocrinologist at the uch london.

He might be too far out for you but he is brilliant. I cannot praise him enough - Dr Mark Cohen.
