I will have medical operation with GA soon, do I really have to remove nail varnish on my toes?

the subject says it really.
I like the colour so much? I would like to keep it.
what harm does it do if I don´t remove?
how does it affect?
thank you in advance.

Yes you do, something about a monitoring point, need to see if your colour is normal there or summink

The pulse oximeter doesn't work so well with nail varnish on. Nail bed colour is a good indication of your oxygen levels too which of course you can't see if it's covered in nail varnish - so yep to needs to go sorry!

I think not. I've had 2 GAs recently and only had to remove finger nail polish - toes were OK to be left - in fact last time I had them done especially so that they looked nice whilst I wallowed in bed.

I think the same kitkat :)

As a previous poster said, it's for the pulse oximeter, which basically measures the oxygenation of your blood. Blue shades of nail vanish are the worst offenders for affecting this reading.

So I guess it's your choice between a pedicure and your anaesthetist beyond able to do their job properly....how much do you like breathing?

I think I will remove DropYourSword :(, thank you.

Oh my god, I'm sorry, I didn't mean that to sound quite so harsh! I really did mean it in a more lighthearted tone!

bluebell234 · 14/10/2013 18:09

no don´t worry DropYourSword.
I just understood that I have to remove it and I like the colour that´s why I got sad.

In an ideal world you would have no nail polish on. The pulse oximeter (machine which tells us how much oxygen is in your blood) doesn't work with nail polish on.

Depending on the op. we often stick it on your feet.

We often have to make labouring women remove their nail varnish pre emergency LSCS. Such a shame as masses of them get their nails (esp. feet) done as pre-baby treat.

where's the issue? You'd need to repaint anyway after a while. Has the bottle run out?
