Tonsillitis and glandular fever

JustMe1993 · 14/10/2013 13:41

So as of yesterday I was admitted with acute tonsillist (my right tonsil swelled so much it covered half my throat) and whilst having my blood test done they found out I've also got glandular fever.

Both of these are contagious but they told me I'm going to feel exhausted to well past Christmas that's if I don't contract anything else. I'm not even allowed to class my partner for a further 4-6 weeks :(

What hurts most is I'm allowed no close contact with people as they can get it including my son :(

Has anyone else has this? How do you cope

My son had glandular fever and a bacterial tonsil infection at the same time when he was 16 . He was very unwell for a few months but the worse thing was that he then got recurrent tonsilitis and had to have his tonsils removed about 15 months after the initial diagnosis. For that 15 months he was literally on antibiotics every third week . Hope you have a better outcome x

I had glandular fever when I was 18. I was sent home from university with it - back to my parents. No-one caught it from me as far as I know including the friends I was sharing with at uni or my parents or my boyfriend at the time.

I did feel incredibly rough though and it would be hard if I had it now with children. I didn't however feel exhausted for months (Dr said I would so they are not always right on that) and I recovered quite well after about 2-3 weeks initially (it was along time ago so I am trying to remember for you!). I missed only a couple of weeks of term and then went back to uni after the Christmas holidays so probably about 4-6 weeks in total after I was diagnosed. Will you have some help at home?

Hi pandsbear

I'm already falling asleep in my hospit bed in just drained and that's without my LO

They've given me steroids and fluids and anti biotic drips etc and it's tiring but when I get home it's just me and my LO my mum and sister work all the time

I do feel for you, you must feel really grim. How long will they keep you in hospital for (sorry I hadn't realised you were still there)? Hopefully the steroids and anti-bs will help your tonsillitis soon. Not sure what (if anything) they can actually 'do' for glandular fever sadly.

I had it two years ago (think I caught it from DD who had just started nursery, apparently this is common, they don't suffer like adults do and it just presents as a bad cold)

Doctor told me no alcohol, no cigarettes, no coffee and to rest as much as possible and have a good diet. I felt ok after about two weeks, but lingering tiredness for at least a year after. Sorry! I am 40 though, so old!

Watch your spleen, I was told to lift nothing as mine was so swollen, hard when you have a toddler.

I feel for you, get well soon. One thing though, you really MUST rest as it can develop into CFS if not careful.

They should be releasing me later on this afternoon been here since Sunday!

Still having some quite bad pain in my stomach but they're chalking it up to me not eating (had it Sunday) I'm wondering whether I should ask about if it's swollen etc? Cause my LO is nearly 2 stone and I have to pick him up etc

I only drink water and don't drink or smoke so I'll be fine there

Thank you!

Ah, so you are healthy anyway! You'll get better really fast!

Do ask about your spleen though. Both my spleen and liver were enlarged and this is really normal. The spleen thing is important as if enlarged and you do heavy lifting it can burst which is nasty and dangerous. You shouldn't really pick up LO, although I know this is really hard to not do. It is only for a few weeks or so.

Saying that, your spleen may be absolutely fine, I hope so.

Hope you feel better soon. Take care.
