Anyone else struggling with their asthma in this heat?

Just wanted a moan really. This heat is really getting me down. I seem to be out of breath all the time. I've upped my Becotide to four puffs morning and night but still seem to be taking Ventolin more often than I would like. I'm finding it really hard just looking after an 18month old! Right, moan over. Just wanted to see if all asthmatics are feeling like this.

Must be just me then! The tension of the football didn't help I must admit!

Come to think of it I've been using ventolin again. I had been symptom and drug free for about two years after giving up the dairy, but I'm taking the odd puff again.

Aparently it's to do with the humidity too.

I agree that you should perhaps rethink your medication. There are more choices out there these days and it's well worth reviewing from time to time, but you may have to be assertive.

I hope it losens up for us soon eh?

i have an inhaler for hayfever not asthma but I think ive been overdosing on it over the last couple of weeks. Vile isnt it.

AbbyLou · 01/07/2006 22:07

I'm on Becotide 200 and the Salamol breath activated one. I used to have 400 for Becotide but when I was pregnant with ds (now 18 months) my asthma almost disappeared. Since having him I have hardly been affected and, on advice of asthma nurse and reduced my Becotide to 200. I have been really well and we were going to try 100 in a few months time with a view to possibly coming off it altogether as i have hardly had any symptoms in all that time. Before I had ds Iwas taking Becotide 400 and still using Ventolin regularly. I think I just feel down because I thought it had almost gone. This attack has really taken me by surpirse and, although I'm used to it, it has really frightened me how quickly it has happened. I think it's the heat because I feel better i the evenings but then worse again durng the night. I usually know when I've got a chest infection because you get that funny feeling in your chest and I haven't got that.

sympathise totally
I have been using my ventolin more than normal -I do think it is the humidity thing that and chasing three girls under 5 about all day !!
Do you have an asthma nurse or clinic?
It is worth reviewing your meds on a reg basis they are generally very knowledgable about new drugs and doses and such.

spidermama · 01/07/2006 22:19

I know just what you mean Abbylou. It's so great when you're symptom free or have the asthma completely under control that you can almost forget you have it. Then it crops up again.

Well the heat is supposed to continue into the early part of the week at least.

Have you tried a de-humidifier? I haven't but I wondered if it would help to have one in the bedroom for these occasions.

ds1 has had a terrible cough for weeks, today I noticed him going a little (hes 3) grey around the mouth so rushed him down the emergency docs and they have said he could be asmathmatic due to "possible" hayfever. they have given me a liquid medicine to open up his airways, and he will have to be tested - does anyone have any advice?

spidermama · 03/07/2006 16:35

No advice really sickandtired. He's alreadygoing for tests. You could try a dehumidifier if he's suffering in the heat.

He may well grow out of it if it is asthma. Loads of kids do.

Good luck anyway.

it's horrible isn't it ds has been wheezing during the night, gave him salbutamol which he got when he had hayfever last time.
didn't seem to do a real lot and by morning he was coughing up green/bloody phlegm.

only a slight wheeze by the time we saw doc this morning and he has prescribed him antibiotics and prednisolone.
trouble is i am scared to use the prednisolone.
and still not sure what to do.
hope everyone feels better soon.

swedishmum · 03/07/2006 16:52

I'm extra wheezy at the moment, so I'm taking it easier. My asthma always improves when I avoid dairy so I'm cutting down for a while and I always have a fan on upstairs. When it's really bad, I find it much easier to breathe if I sleep downstairs - haven't resorted to that yet though. I always breathe easier near water - must cut down on dust or pollen or something so keep bowls on the window sills. Think I saw it on the telly years ago.

TinyGang · 03/07/2006 16:54

Sympathies to you all - wheezing is awful I know

Strangely I'm the opposite - ok in the heat but cold winter mornings start me off.

Felt worse again today!!!I'm a teacher and we've no end of kids really struggling too. It's horrible to see them when they're so little. I'm hoping and praying that ds (18 months) doesn't develop it. No signs as yet!! I just feel as though I'm struggling for breath all day at the moment. My classroom is so hot and I just don't have the energy to teach the kids!!!

Just to say, ME TOO!

It's the humidity, am on usual inhaler, which is Seretide 250mg, and using Ventolin 2 puffs 4 times a day, and still wheezing.

Had a real dilemma this afternoon, as knew the boys needed to get and do something as they had got very whiney, but had no energy to take them anywhere.
Not sleeping well either, hopefully there will be a storm tonight and that might bring respite.
Thinking of you, as I prepare to toddle off to bed and wheeze some more!

AbbyLou · 17/07/2006 17:15

Oh my god it's back with a vengeance! I am a teacher and we had the kids sports day this afternoon in the blazing heat. I would have cancelled it personally but the parents seemed quite happy. Because I am the PE co-ordinator I have to be involved in putting equipment out for each race and collecting it afterwards. By the end of the afternoon I had had that much ventolin I was totally out of it. I had to wait a while to drive home as I felt very wobbly.
