My 2 DS2 old has threadworms wasnt too worried as have been here with my older two but, he has LOADS. They would get one or two, have a mebendazole tablet and problem solved. He has had two doses two days apart and every poo has more and more in. I am making sure we are all hand washing, bedding all being washed etc. Is this normal after treatment? Anything else I can do, it is so vile!
Thanks.

With that much of an infestation, think you need to either speak to the pharmacist or your gp, are the worms still alive (sorry!) because it could be all the dead ones coming out. Also thought the treatment was 1 tablet then another one 2 weeks later, not 2 days, so definitely see GP.

why have you given him two doses so close together when the recommendation is for a follow up dose 2 weeks later if needed. sheesh...

the worms are not multiplying, that is most likely the dead ones coming out (unless it's his guts disintegrating due to the overdose of toxic chemicals you've given him but that is unlikely).

I think you should wait and see what happens and as it does appear to be a bad infestation, give him another wormer in 2 weeks time and that should be an end of it.

or you can go to your gp and explain you've overdosed your child on wormers and your reasoning for doing that and then ask him what you should do.

First of all: He won't be 'overdosed', mebendazole has minimal take-up outside of the digestive tract, and the nornal dose for roundworm is daily tablets, so he'll be fine.

It does sound like a heavy infestation, poor ds and poor you OP! It does take up to 48 hours for the worms to die after taking tablets, so I bet things will ease off after another day. If not, head for GP. Either way, definitely re-treat two weeks from initial dose.

Personally, I would probably re-treat one last time two weeks after that too - but that may be overkill Wink

Thank you Elibean and labro.
Didn't need quite such an aggressive post thanks posh penny, just looking for some wise Mums net advice. I gave him it 2 days apart as recommended by my GP if that helps you to understand my actions as it is not toxic and the point of two weeks apart is to kill missed eggs that have hatched, not prevent overdose.
Fingers crossed it will kick in then Elibean, GPNsaid they should have been coming out dead after 48 hours, hence second dose but they're still very much alive :(. Luckily he is not bothered at all and not scratching so i really hope we can get rid of them quick.

I'd give it a couple more days (it's the weekend anyway) and then book another GP appointment. No doubt this appointment will be later in the week and if the worms are clearing up by then you can cancel the appointment.

If they are still live and well the GP might want to consider another drug treatment. Or as has happened here, recommend more regular doses than the information leaflet suggest. If it has cleared up still do the 2 week dose.

The horror of worms is something we're yet to experience here. Not looking forwards to the infestation of parasite stage. Best of luck to you clearing this soon.
