Question for dentists!

If an x-ray shows nothing amiss, is it still worth/necessary to have a root filling on a tooth sensitive to heat/cold? Thanks

I was wondering this. Do you have an answer OP?

Not a dentist but ... how much pain are you in, Op? My tooth was very painful with hot/cold food and the gum was fine and X-ray showed nowt. In fact my lovely dentist spent a lot of time working out which tooth was actually causing pain as you can suffer referred pain ie pain coming from another tooth. Anyway when he went into the tooth there was a lot of blood and infection under the old filling and a root canal was needed.

X rays don't show much for quite some time after the nerve has died so the diagnosis should be based on symptoms really rather than x rays. That said, as lord mentioned! it's crucial to know precisely which tooth is the problem.

Thank you. In my case, I think it is actually the wonkily partially erupted wisdom tooth causing pain on the one next to it.

Thanks for your replies - I thought the thread had died a death. My dentist has suggested root canal on a tooth which intermittently hurts with heat and is sometimes tender. It's clear to me which tooth it is. However, it's not all the time and I'm hugely scared of having it done (I know this is something I'll just have to get past but I'm finding it hard).
