Anyone had chickenpox in their thirties? My husband is covered in blisters and really suffering, should he go to the doc? What can I give him to make him feel better? Any advice gratefully received.

My brother had it then and was quite unwell for a few weeks. Has he taken Piriton ? Tepid baths might help the irritation.

My dh had this a couple of years ago and he was very uncomfortable with it. Calamine lotion worked quite well for him, just get him to strip naked somewhere that you can wash the floor afterwards and use cotton wool buds to put it on every pox. Also quite helpful was to put porridge oats in a muslin and then hang under the tap while you run a tepid bath. The worst time for my dh was while he was asleep as he would scratch in his sleep, paracetamol would have helped to ease the itching but he refused to take it. He wishes he had now as he has some quite nasty scars left.

tea tree products are quite good for chicken pox

He should ring the doc. They may want to see him (they wanted to see me). I had it when I was 35. I took Piriton for the itching and ibuprofen and paracetamol to reduce my temp. You could try Eurax cream for the itching too. Cool showers or baths might help.

I would take him in. It can be a bit worse on adults.

Oh, and I found 4% calamine acqueous cream better than lotion (or the stronger creams).

Thanks for advice - made an appointment for him tomorrow with doc and dosed him up with ibuprofen and piriton. Really is alot worse in adults - he looks like something from the middle ages!

I had chickenpox aged 31. Don't want to worry you but I was seriously ill and admitted to hospital for 3 days. It was made worse as I had not long before had my baby. Am glad he has a dr's appt tomorrow. It took me a long time to recover, didn't leave the house for 3 weeks and still unwell for about 2 months. I know a few others who have had it in their thirties and they have also said their recovery took a while.

Some lavender oil in a bath really helped me, as did anti-allergy tablets. If he has a temperature then paracetomol can help.

There is no truer test of love than kneeling on the kitchen floor and applying calamine to the pox on your dh's perineum before the first cup of coffee of the day.

It is really important that he sees a doc asap. I had Chickenpox as an adult some years ago and my GP made me see him every week for about three weeks for checkups as there is a risk of serious complications in adults.
One of the advanatges of going to my GP was that he prescribed some powerful drugs which weakened the symptoms. He told me that although they were really expensive to prescribe, it was the practice's policy to provide them, as they take chickenpox in adults so seriously.

Definitley see GP. There can be serious compliactions of chickenpox in adults. Best if GP knows. He might prescribe antiviral medication to reduce symptoms

mummydear · 29/06/2006 23:18

My hubby had it when he was 38, GP gave him some tablets to ease the symtoms and he was back at work within 2 weeks.

I had it when I was 20 and had three weeks off work !

Ask about oral acyclovir, it is usually used against herpes viruses but can be used with chickenpox as well ( similar viruses).

I had it in my thirties and was presribed tablets to lessen symptons. I think they have to be taken as soon as possible to be of any use and they are very expensive. The chemist told me they only keep a couple of tablets in stock as they are very expensive and they order more in when required.
