Hypnotherapy- any experiences

I've booked some sessions for a kind of anxiety based issue ( bit like a phobia) but at the first one I really could not relax at all. I felt self conscious and very mentally alert. I do have an issue with being in control ( generally) and even though I know hypnotherapy is not about losing control, I am wondering if it's worth persevering- it's quite expensive and not sure how many sessions to try before I give up.

Anyone else got any good or bad experiences?

I went to my gp about my anxiety (for both a phobia and more general anxiety) and got referred for therapy.

I had 8 sessions and found talking helped me address reasons for my anxiety and helped me pinpoint tge cause more effectively. I also thought I was scared of one thing (needles) but then realised a massive part of the fear was not the needle but the loss of control (having something done for me, no control over blood low/ reactions/ way they are administered)

it helped me praxtically take control but I still had the anxiety! so it helped a lot and I could identify cause and how to avoid my usual avoidance techniques and try to confront it.

however this left me confronting it with no real means to actually overcome the anxiety itself.

after a bad experience I was referred for hypnotherapy. we had one session and it was absolutley amazing. it was hypnotherapy and meditation and relped me learn calming breathing, how to relax in the run up to anxiety inducing events etc.

I had about 10 sessions. It changed my life!

I still do meditation and havent had an anxiety attack in a long time.

overall for me I thijk doing both methods helped a lot more than just therapy or just hypnotherapy. and a lot of it can be down to the hypnotherapy practitioner themselves. mine was actually an nhs doctor who did it in her spare time and would squeese me in at the hospital (I was initially hold of her wheb pregnant and having panic attacks over blood tests etc) - you just have yo click with them I think. if something doesnt feel right maybe see if you can get taster sessions with other people?

also maybe see gp and get refered for therapy alongside? they may have sone free of cheaper options. ove got a phone number I can ring if things are getting on top of me now, that I hace not had to ring

hth but it is just my experience iyswim?

I had it for depression & anxiety & it was a waste of time. I just felt a bit relaxed. I just felt she kept making me come back for the money.

I am paying for this @ £50 a time so thinking of 10 sessions seems very costly. Fine if it works, but if not- phew!

I need it - or am trying it- for a phobia type issue that hits me when travelling, and I thought it would help the vicious circle of worrying bringing on real physical symptoms. But so far I can't relax.

Hi I am a Hypnotherapist, so I thought I'd add my input! Firstly, I can't stress how important it is to choose a registered therapist! Sadly (at the moment) anyone can call themselves a Hypnotherapist, regardless of training (if any), or insurance, or CRB checks etc. Hopefully, this will change, and we will HAVE to be registered in order to practise. This would be good all round, as the client will be protected (we work from a strict code of ethics, and must be qualified and insured), and it will also 'weed out' the charlatans who see hypnosis as easy money.

Hypnotherapy is actually the fusion of Psychotherapy and Hypnosis, and for Sophiedotty, the results she experienced were classic symptoms of the Psychotherapy portion of the session either poorly executed or non-existent.

Hypno-hypno - the phobia issue should really be wrapped up in around three sessions, not ten (obviously I do not have all the facts, but ten seems extreme for a phobia!)

NotYoMomma - ten to twelve sessions would be typical for deep-rooted anxiety/depression - and plainly your therapist had received proper training, and understood the process completely - good for you!

So, my advice, in a nutshell: ONLY choose a registered therapist (either National Council of Hypnotherapy (NCH), or one registered with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC)) Or, preferably both! You can then be sure that your therapist really has your best interests at the core of his/her work, and you have some recourse if you are not happy.

Like I say, just my two penn'orth - if you wish me to clarify anything please ask

sounds about right in my case as I had the crippling phobia and anxiety for over 20 years!

it took longer as ot was spread out over 9 months and I was pregnant at the time which was contributing to the anxiety/ fear!

It may be that the therapist is more focused on the hypnosis/ meditation side OP and ignoring the therapy side which I found I really needed both to be sucessful.

mine was all free on nhs but I had the two different aspects seperatley
