As UCM has broken the boundaries of not name changing for embarassing questions, I thought i would join in. I've had piles on and off since ds was born 6 years ago and the current bout has lasted for 2 weeks and have tried anusol, germaloids but not only is percy the pile still there, but he's bought a friend for company. Someone please help, i move house tomorrow and don't really need this! Thanks

lol @ 'percy the pile', not had much experience apart from directly after giving birth, but can't you just erm....push them back up again??

AllieBongo · 29/06/2006 09:38

does this help ?

Treatment

It is usually best, with haemorrhoids, to get by with the least treatment possible, as even after the most extensive treatments they may still return.

  • Many times they will settle down over a matter of days without any treatment.
  • Cream or suppositories (bullet-shaped tablets to be inserted into the anus) may be bought over the counter, or your doctor may prescribe one. These soothe itching and pain, and cause swelling and bleeding to diminish.
  • Cold compresses, even ice can be helpful.

If you do not get better with these approaches, your doctor may ask a specialist to see you who may:

  • Put little rubber bands round the haemorrhoids, which will cause them to shrivel and wither away.
  • Inject a substance into the haemorrhoids which causes them to wither away (sclerotherapy).
  • Cut away the problem, usually under a general anaesthetic.

Prevention

Haemorrhoids are very common, and will occur anyway, but, as implied above, useful aspects of prevention are:

  • Avoid becoming overweight, and lose weight if you are.
  • Eat a high fibre diet.
  • Exercise regularly.

also

The doctor may recommend a change of diet with the addition of more fibre and roughage particularly green vegetables, fresh fruit, wholegrain cereals and bran. Drinking 8 to 10 glasses of fluid daily is advisable.

I think alliebongo you are like me. DS is 5 and I have recurrent piles which started during my pregnancy with him. I am not overweight, but not that great on fibre or exercise. With DD going to the loo after giving birth took longer than the actual birth. I have considered going to the doctor because I think the first set of treatments only alleviate symptoms rather than prevent recurrence but have not quite got myself to that stage.

i don't want anyone prodding my bum! Thanks for the tips. I'm pretty good with bran and fruit and veg. don't drink enough and don't excercise. I'm trying not to itch, but it's so hard!
Bless you all!

I had a bum like a chimpanzee (according to my midwife) after ds2 was born. 5 years on I still get them but nowhere near as bad. Proctosedyl cream on prescription is the only thing that helps soothe them when they are at their worst.

Thank goodness someone has got a recent thread on this. I am in agony with the worst piles I hae ever had - worse than after giving birth. Went to doc this morning and he exclaimed 'they are huge!' He gave me some Anusol, but the pain is still there. He didn't even mention that proctosedyl, which sounds like exactly what I need. Back I go tomorrow I think. Thanks for that info

try freezing an ice pole and applying to percy the pile

mixedemotions123 · 30/06/2006 13:02

You could try this
get a latex glove and fill it with ice, then lay the fingers over the pile
get some gauze and soak it in witch hazel, freeze it and lay in on the little buggers.
