Iron Infusion experiences??

Hi, I had an appointment with a Haematologist last week due to being very anaemic and oral iron supplementation given by my GP not rectifying my anaemia. It turns out I've been anaemic for the last 7 years though I've only become aware in the last 3 years due to my pregnancies. Anyway, the pregnancies have made my anaemia even worse and seeing as iron tablets aren't working I've been prescribed an Iron infusion to boost my iron stores back up to normal. I would just like to know about other peoples experiences of having this done . I've done some research online and all I've read are rather frightening stories of people going into anaphylaxis due to the infusion. If someone could enlighten me to their experience it would be much appreciated. One very anxious mummy here Sad

Hi kite I haven't had an iron infusion, but I know two women who have them, my friend and her mother in law, they have never had any problems. Every procedure comes with risks and side effects, try not to google.
Do you know what your ferritin levels are? are you having hair loss? I am having hair loss due to low ferritin levels. Hope you don't mind me asking.x

Thank you for getting back to me. I know I shouldn't of googled but I just couldn't help myself, the ever so curious, that's me. It was the fact that Doctor who prescribed it to me made a point of telling me. "Now this drug is known to cause reactions in people" he just didn't tell me what they were. So I found out for myself. As far as I'm aware my ferritin levels are 2. He did tell me basically I'm that anaemic that It appears like Im 2 pints of blood down. Not because I'm losing blood but because I'm that low in iron. I have had hair loss over the last 8 months but that's because I've recently had a baby and hair loss tends to happen after you've had a baby. X

My mum and friend of mine has had infusions with no trouble . I think they take quite a while so take something to distract you and a comfy pillow .

Ask them/GP if they'll monitor you in the months afterwards so that you don't get like this again .

My brother has had a couple, he never had a problem with them but they do take ages.

Thank you so much, I feel a lot more at ease now Smile

Yes, unfortunately I was prescribed the one that can take 6 hours or more to do. Fun fun. But I'm told if it works, I will feel fantastic. X

I had a long iron transfusion. They start it at a very slow rate to observe for any reaction then turn it up if all appears fine. I had mine at 38wks pregnant & don't remember suddenly feeling much better but having a newborn could well have counteracted any benefits of the transfusion!
