Costochondritis

Would this make me breathless? Not just 'just been for a run' breathless but a constricted feeling?

I've posted on here a lot lately about various things, my history is i have ankylosing spondylitis, costochondritis, generally been unwell for six weeks. But this feeling like I can't get air in my lungs is terrifying. My peak flow test is just under 400, my oxygen output is 99. Had a chest x ray four weeks ago who which suggested possible consolidation suggesting infection but not significant to warrant a scan. So there's nothing obvious. Then I wondered if the naproxen or ibuprofen was doing it but I having had one since yesterday lunchtime. Completely fed up with worrying x x

Costs chondrites causes pain, not breathlessness. The X-ray changes ugliest you may have a problem brewing. Get yourself checked by a doctor today.

Now I'm worried Clobbered. I've seen the gp lots in the last few weeks and I've read costochondritis causes inflammation which can cause breathing problems x

If it's a restricted feeling that sounds like the costochrondritis as it can make your rib cage feel tight... More like inability to breathe deeply rather than out of puff?

mandmsmummy · 07/10/2013 07:15

Yes that's the feeling, have you had it? Does it last long? X

I get costochrondritis at least once a year after a virus, seems to be programmed into me now. Normally I get an acute phase of a week or two including the tight chest and generally feeling like I've been poked in the ribs/sternum with a fork all over. Then it will take a couple of weeks to fade. First time I had it if lasted a lot longer though.

If sounds like you've had tests to rule out other conditions - although you might want to read up on Bornholm's disease which if you get it bad is like costochrondritis on steroids - but caused by a virus. Not sure it's always on the docs radar but my dad had it and even though normally it's just acute, he had it for ages, so it does spring to mind if you've been really ill.

My best advice would be to try and relax as stress/panic will make it feel worse. Take your anti inflammatories at a full dose and you can always take paracetamol as well.

Thanks, I have ankylosing spondylitis and was out on naproxen but it seemed to make the breathing worse. Not sure now whether it's the medication or costochondritis x

I have been diagnosed with costo and it makes my chest tight like I cant breathe, it hurts to breathe in and sometimes feels like I cant take a deep breath iyswim. It's a shitty thing and I'm always on edge because I feel there's something wrong with my heart/lungs :(

Know what you mean strawberry, the only thing I don't have is pain breathing in. X
